Here is what’s happening in Day 11 of Cleveland Indians spring training - cleveland.com

GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- To borrow a phrase from another sport, the Indians will “move the chains” on Sunday as they open their spring-training season against the Reds at Goodyear Ballpark at 3:05 p.m. ET. It’s the first of 29 exhibition games, but it moves them an inch or two closer to opening day against Detroit on April 1.

Right-hander Cal Quantrill will start for the Indians followed by Triston McKenzie. They’re trying to win the last two spots in the rotation behind Shane Bieber, Zach Plesac and Aaron Civale.

Quantrill and McKenzie are expected to go two innings each. James Karinchak, Bryan Shaw and Heath Hembree will follow. Shaw and Hembree are in camp on minor league deals.

Right-hander Jose De Leon is scheduled to start for the Reds. He’s trying to win a job in Cincinnati’s crowded rotation after pitching well in Puerto Rico this winter. De Leon, who has appeared in the big leagues with the Dodgers and Rays, posted a 3.71 ERA for Caguas, striking out 31 of the 69 batters he faced in four starts. He did that in 17 innings.

De Leon has pitched in the big leagues for the Dodgers and Rays.

Here’s the Indians first lineup of the spring: CF Oscar Mercado, LF Ben Gamel, 1B Jake Bauers, RF Josh Naylor, 3B Mike Freeman, 2B Yu Chang, DH Billy Hamilton, SS Andres Gimenez, C Austin Hedges and RHP Quantril, who has changed his number from 38 to 47.

On the clock:

Weather watch: It’s going to be sunny with a high of 65 degrees in Goodyear on Sunday. The low will be 37 degrees.

Testing, testing: Indians players will begin testing for the coronavirus at 7:30 a.m. Sunday.

In the pen: Plesac and Oliver Perez are scheduled to throw bullpen sessions at 9:55 a.m.

Swing the bats: Batting practice starts at 10:20 a.m. Eight groups of three to four players will hit on three different fields.

On the air: Tom Hamilton and Jim Rosenhaus will call Sunday’s game on WTAM/1100 at 3:05 p.m.

Important dates: The Indians play Kansas City on Monday at Goodyear Ballpark at 3:05 p.m. Bieber is scheduled to start for the Indians. Right-hander Jackson Kowar, the Royals No.1 pick in 2018, is scheduled to start for Kansas City.

WTAM will broadcast the game.

Old friends: The Reds are managed by former Indians infielder David Bell. Outfielder Tyler Naquin, the Indians No.1 pick in 2012, is in camp with Cincinnati trying to make the 26-man roster as a spring training invitee.

What they’re saying: “Last year was wild for everybody. It’s not like we’re the only people dealing with COVID. In the end, we were playing baseball games. There’s a raging epidemic going on, but between the lines we got to do what we were training to do. It wasn’t ideal, but I think there were more people in the world dealing with harder things and we were able to play a little baseball. Hopefully, we’ve got 162 coming your way this year. I’m focusing on the good stuff in 2021.” -- Quantrill on making the transition from 2020 to 2021.
