Neuqua Valley senior Riley Ammenhauser is always pushing for new frontiers.

The two-time defending state champion in the triple jump already had posted one of the best outdoor performances in the country.

That was not enough.

“I jumped from the 40-(foot) board,” Ammenhauser said. “It’s something I am really trying too push myself to do because it’s a bigger challenge.

“I love the edge.”

Ammenhauser found another edge Thursday night in the Class 3A Lockport Sectional, setting a new personal record with a stunning jump of 42 feet, 11 inches.

“I have been training really hard this season to go out with a bang,” she said.

The Michigan recruit captured three individual sectional titles, also winning the long jump with a 19-4.25.

“My mentality was just run as fast as I could and get a PR jump,” she said.

Ammenhauser put the finishing touches on her remarkable effort, edging Waubonsie Valley’s Itzel Garcia with a 12.23 seconds in the 100-meter dash. Her time just eclipsed Garcia’s 12.26.

“I love running the 100,” Ammenhauser said.

Ammenhauser is open to all possibilities in the triple jump, including reaching the seemingly impossible distance of 43 or even 44 feet.

“On my last jump, I fouled,” she said. “But I was way past the 13-meter mark and it was at least 43 or nearly 44 feet. I just love going out like this.”

Ammenhauser qualified for the state meet on Saturday, June 12 at Eastern Illinois. She will be joined by Garcia, who won the 200.

Naperville North captured the team title with its depth and standout distance runners, finishing with 113 points. Neuqua ended up third.

Senior Maggie Gamboa dominated the 3,200 for Naperville North, running a blistering 10:53.58.

Gamboa survived the punishing 85-degree heat. She also qualified for state in the 3,200 as a sophomore.

“I’m not as pleased with the last part of the race because my legs got super tired,” she said. “I’m still happy with what I could do in these conditions.”

Ammenhauser wasn’t the only jumper to break new heights.

Naperville North junior Madeline Andelbradt also set a new record with a high jump of 5-7.50. She defeated teammate Maeve Conneely, who jumped 5-3.

Naperville Central swept the 400 and 800 relays. Emily Orth, Abby Wood, Allison Comer and Sarah McCracken made up the 400. Deja Richardson replaced Comer in the 800.

Comer saved her best in a brilliant showdown with Naperville North rival Mackenzie Skeen. Comer leaned at the tape in the 400, running a personal-best 58.02 to beat Skeen’s 58.15.

Each has won two races this season.

“I love to go out hard in the first seven seconds before the pain sets in,” Comer said. “I wasn’t even sure of my time or if I even won, but I love that final curve.”

If Ammenhauser marks one generational talent for Neuqua, freshman sprinter Inara Ukawuba is the next dynamic talent to watch.

She made a striking impression, capturing the 100 hurdles with a superb 14.94. She also finished fifth in the 100.

Elisabeth Camic, a senior, also achieved an impressive double for Benet.

She made up a five-meter distance to lead the Redwings to a win in the 3,200 relay.

Less than an hour later, Camic came back to win the 800 with a personal-best 2:17.27. She edged Neuqua Valley’s Jessie Bailey, who ran a 2:17.70.

“I think it was a really beautiful experience,” Camic said. “This is my second time now going downstate in track, but it feels great to have the rest of our relay team go with me.”

Camic kept her adrenaline at a high level.

“I just felt really comfortable going out there and setting the pace,” she said. “And just making that final push.”
