Lyric Stewart is adjusting to her new life as a freshman on the Georgia volleyball team. A freshman outside hitter from Mansfield, Texas, located about 35 miles from Dallas, Stewart is liking what she's seeing and doing on and off the court.
Stewart and the Bulldogs host an exhibition game against Wake Forest at Stegeman Coliseum on Saturday (1 p.m.), and then kick off their season on Aug. 27, against Morehead State.
After a recent practice, Stewart sat down for a Quick Chat. She talked about her start in the sport, starting her career at Georgia, mac and cheese, and much more. Here's some of what she had to say:
Frierson: You're a couple of days into the start of practice, so how is everything going so far?
Stewart: It's going good. I like it a lot over here.
Frierson: Has this experience been about what you expected or did you not really know what to expect in your first preseason here?
Stewart: It's about the same, like what I expected. Competition-wise, it's the same or a little bit better than my club team, but high school it's a major difference. Everybody's so good. The whole working out all day is something different, like we don't have just one three-hour practice.
Frierson: How old were you when you started playing volleyball and what got you into the sport?
Stewart: I was 13 years old when I first started. I had a really good friend at school that played volleyball — my whole family played basketball and they tried to force me [laughs] to play basketball. And I hated it,
My friend invited me to this clinic that her club was having, and I knew nothing about volleyball. I didn't even have knee pads, I wore tennis shoes, but I had a lot of fun.
I told my mom, I really like this sport. At first she told me, no, but then the coach told her that she wanted me on her team. My mom was like, we'll give it a year. And then she needed up liking it, too.
Frierson: What was it about basketball that didn't appeal to you?
Stewart: It's just the physical contact. I don't like other people touching me and all up in my space [laughs].
Frierson: We just got done with the Olympics and there was a ton of volleyball on TV. Did you watch much of it? Do you watch the sport when you get the chance or just play it?
Stewart: I didn't really watch the Olympics this year but I do enjoy playing the sport a lot.
Frierson: When did it click for you that volleyball was something that you were good at, that you liked doing, and that you had a future in it beyond club and high school?
Stewart: I'd say it was probably my 15s year. That's when I got moved to the outside, and it was completely different. I used to be a middle (blocker), and then once I got moved to the outside I was like, I'm so much naturally better at this than I am in the middle. That was just a quick realization.
Frierson: Did that change your whole thought process with the sport?
Stewart: Not really. I always had a love for the sport, even when I was a middle. It's pretty much the same technique, it's just different strategies and stuff.
Frierson: What's something you could eat every day and never get tired of it?
Stewart: Mac and cheese — I love mac and cheese.
Frierson: Is it just the simple Kraft out of the box or do you like the fancy kind more?
Stewart: It's anything. Kraft, the fancy kind, anything.
Frierson: How are you in the kitchen?
Stewart: I'm decent. I know the simple meals — I can't make a steak but I can make chicken, potatoes, the simple stuff.
Frierson: If you could play any other sport for Georgia, just to see what it was like, what sport would it be?
Stewart: Probably gymnastics. I love when we pass by their gym and they're practicing, I'm just so intrigued. And they are so good.
Frierson: Do you have a creative side? Is there anything creative you do or wish you could do?
Stewart: I used to be able to pain really well, and then I got caught up with volleyball and I didn't have the free time. I used to draw and paint really often. I hope to get back to it one day because it was a stress reliever and I enjoyed it.
Frierson: If you could travel anywhere in the world on somebody else's dime, where would you like to go and who would you take with you?
Stewart: I would go to Australia, and I probably would bring my best friend. There's never a dull time with her, and she wants to do everything that I want to do. We're basically like the same person. And I chose Australia because of the nature and the animals out there, and the beaches. They have a pink sand beach and I think that's so cool. It seems like its own little world.
