Love Looks Like This: Chèrie Chan and Jessey Lee's Secret Marriage - Brides

Brides is committed to guiding ALL couples through not only their wedding planning journey, but through relationship milestones and ups and downs. Every love story is beautiful, has its own distinct history, and its own trials—there's no relationship that looks the same. To celebrate that uniqueness, we're asking couples to open up about their love story, for our latest column, "Love Looks Like This." Below, Chèrie Chan and Jessey Lee from Netflix's "Bling Empire" tell their love story.

How They Met

Chèrie: I met Jessey in Vegas, when I was visiting with some mutual friends who I had gone to UCLA with. We didn’t talk to each other at all, but knew of each other through those friends. After his divorce, he reached out to me half a year later. We reconnected when he was visiting L.A. from Dallas and asked me about a restaurant recommendation. I gave him the name of an omakase restaurant that I love and he ended up inviting me to a Rolls Royce event with him. At that time, I thought we would just be friends so I asked to bring a girlfriend with me. But, he said that wouldn’t really work. I found out that the reason that I couldn’t invite a friend was that it was a private dinner for 10 that the brand was hosting.

Jessey:  I was staying in Beverly Hills and the event was in Malibu, and we ended up driving back to the hotel and talking in the lobby, talking, until at least 4 a.m. She finally told me that she had to go home and the funny part is that after she got home, we continued to talk on the phone. I actually went in for a kiss in the lobby and she dodged me.

Chèrie: At that time I viewed him more as a friend. I was like, “What are you doing?!” He was really embarrassed.

Jessey: But then when we were talking later at home, she did send me a kissie emoji, so…

Finding Unconditional Love

Chèrie: The reason why I fell in love with Jessey is because of who he is on the inside. He’s so kindhearted. He’s very giving and not that many people know that about him.

Jessey: She is being very humble about those early days. There were days for me that were tougher than others. For her to stand by my side and accept things… It’s easy to love somebody when everything is good. But the divorce was maybe the lowest part of my life.

Chèrie: If you love someone, it’s unconditional. I knew he was going through a lot. Our Feng Shui master said we were together in our past lives and we were destined to be together in this lifetime. I eventually wrote a song called Destiny that comes out on iTunes February 14.

Jessey: For me, it’s believing in fate and that God has a plan for us. When I met Chèrie, I was at the lowest point of my life. When in life you feel like you are very low, when there is someone else who is there and supports you, it really just uplifts you in this amazing way. If it wasn’t for her love and support, it would have been so much tougher. Sometimes life just blesses you. Chèrie didn’t have to endure what she did through my separation, but she did. She stuck around and here we are now, one happy family.

Chèrie: I think what’s unique about our relationship is that I trust him 100,000,000%. We support each other no matter what it is.

Jessey: What’s unique is an acceptance of our differences. I think in a relationship, people often talk about how similar they are to one another. We love what’s similar, but also our differences.

Saying "I Do"

Chèrie: I love that Jessey basically planned our entire wedding. I was very picky about the location. Truthfully, I wanted to have the wedding when my mom was around, and when she wasn’t there anymore, I didn’t want to do it. Jessey encouraged me and when I wasn’t feeling inspired to plan, he did the whole thing. I just took care of the dress, and I picked out the flowers. He took care of the invites and the venue—everything. We had a private wedding in Champagne, France, and he even threw in a surprise, elaborate proposal a couple of days before the wedding. We are talking about planning a larger wedding, but I’m happy that Jessey fulfilled my dream of a princess wedding in Champagne.

For our small, private wedding at Château de Saran, we invited friends who we thought would be more open and able to travel. We had a cocktail reception and ceremony with just eight guests. We had more staff than guests, because my dress required people to help me. We’re so grateful that the property let us get married there, and for Jessey’s relationship with LVMH. When we learned we were staying there, I asked if we could have our wedding. Normally, they don’t allow any filming, but they let us do what we wanted and it felt so special. When we exchanged vows, it was the most special moment.

Jessey: I didn’t even write mine down. I just winged it. My favorite part was watching Chèrie walk down the aisle.

Chèrie: I’m just so grateful for our beautiful wedding and I’m the most grateful to have two children together with Jessey.

Jessey: Me, too. For me, it’s been amazing being together and watching our kids grow.
