‘And Just Like That…’ Season 2 Is Doubling Down on Che Diaz - Vanity Fair

“I want to show the dimension of Che that people didn’t see, for whatever reason—because they were blinded, out of fear or terror,” says show creator Michael Patrick King.

Like it or not, Che Diaz, the most divisive character of Sex and the City’s revival, is here to stay. The character welcomed a tidal wave of criticism for (sort of) breaking up Miranda and Steve, singing “California Girls” unironically, and using something called a “Woke Moment” button. Nevertheless, they persisted—and Sara Ramirez’s nonbinary stand-up and podcast host is returning for And Just Like That… season two.

“One of my burning passions about Season 2 is Che,” show creator Michael Patrick King told Variety in a recent interview. “I want to show the dimension of Che that people didn’t see, for whatever reason—because they were blinded, out of fear or terror. I want to show more of Che rather than less of Che. Like, really.

King said that he wasn’t deterred by the idea that he birthed TV’s “most polarizing character” and that viewers will reunite with Che about three weeks after the finale left off, when Miranda joins her new love in Los Angeles. “The first season was judging a book by its cover,” he said of Che, “and Season 2 is about reading the book.”

In their cover story with Variety, Ramirez (who also identifies as nonbinary) said they’re “aware that Che made waves,” but that they’ve also steered clear of reading most press. “I choose what I receive, right?” Ramirez said. “That’s the beauty of being grown—I don’t have to receive anything! And this is Michael’s baby. He created this role. He wrote it. Those are his and his writing team’s jokes.”

Ramirez argued that the character’s messier qualities are what attracted them to the role. “Che is a great reminder that even when we don’t like someone in our community, they still deserve love, safety and joy, like everyone else,” they said. “But the movement for liberation includes everyone, even people we don’t like. This movement, this fight, this party of pride, isn’t just for the people who make us feel cozy and cute—it’s for everyone.” The actor also suggested that viewers who “get caught up in this character, at least learn about how people like Che Diaz are currently trying to survive escalating attacks on our community.

When asked how long Ramirez plans to appear on the oft-debated series, they told Variety, “We’ll take it one season at a time, how about that?” Perhaps after the second season, Sarah Jessica Parker will finally acknowledge if she actually found Che funny?
