The course had changed from a year ago, but there was a bit of déjà vu surrounding the final round of the BMW Championship. Once again Patrick Cantlay found himself atop the leaderboard entering the final round of the penultimate event of the PGA Tour season, albeit this time alone in the lead at Wilmington Country Club in Delaware rather than tied at Caves Valley Golf Club in Maryland. And by day’s end, he had pulled out a victory a week ahead of the Tour Championship.
Cantlay closed with a two-under 69 for a 14-under 270 total to beat Scott Stallings by one shot at Wilmington C.C. It wasn’t a flashy round, but it was enough to give him a great chance to become the first player to win the FedEx Cup in back-to-back years, not to mention claim the $18 million reward that comes with the title. Cantlay's win jumps him to No. 2 in the FedEx Cup eligibility standings, trailiing only Scottie Scheffler. He will start two strokes behind Scheffler when play begins on Thursday at East Lake.
This was the fourth time in Cantlay’s career that he was leading entering the final round, and the third time he’d closed things out. He’s already had 10 top-10 finishes in the 2021-22 season, the most of any year in his career, but he hadn’t won an individual title. His lone win in 2022 has been at the Zurich Classic, where he teamed with Xander Schauffele en route to victory. His BMW repeat also made him the first player to ever win a playoff event in consecutive years.
With the win, Cantlay grabbed the $2.7 million first place prize money payout from the overall $15 million purse. Here’s the prize money payout for each golfer competing. Check back shortly after the end of the tournament and we’ll update the list with individual names and how much they specifically earned.
