Tommy Dunsire Finishes In Top Ten At Marquette Intercollegiate - Northern Illinois University Athletics

RIVER HILLS, Wis. – The Northern Illinois University men's golf team finished in ninth place Monday at the Marquette Intercollegiate at Milwaukee Country Club.

"Milwaukee Country Club is a top-100 golf course in the United States and it provided a championship experience this week," said head coach John Carlson. "Discipline was key into the greens, which were firm with difficult hole locations. There were many top teams here this week from across the country, including Auburn who's a top-five team and won a tournament already this year."

Fifth-Year Senior Tommy Dunsire (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) was the Huskies' top finisher in the event, tying for eighth place with a 54-hole score of three-over par 213. Dunsire opened the tournament with an opening round 69 on Sunday on the par 70 course. He shot a one-over 71 in the second round to put himself in a tie for fifth place going into Monday's final round. Dunsire carded a 73 on Monday to finish at three-over for the tournament.

NIU had its lowest team score of the tournament on Monday with an eight-over par 288. Zach Place (Roselle, Ill./Lake Park) led the way with his best round of the week, an even par 70. Ben Sluzas (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) was three-under par on the day through eight holes but finished with a one-over par 71, his best round after two rounds of 73. Dunsire's 73 and Campbell Wolf's (Mechanicsburg, Pa./ETSU) 74 rounded out the NIU scoring group for the final round.

Sluzas finished the tournament in a tie for 30th place at seven-over par. Wolf tied for 58th at 12-over par.

The Huskies finished with a team score of +30 870, one stroke behind UC Davis for eighth place and two behind Charlotte. Auburn won the tournament by six shots over Northwestern and the host Golden Eagles.

"Our team finish this week was outstanding considering how strong the field was, with many teams that are at the top of their conferences," Carlson said. "At the end of the day, you want a team that is on the road consistently together. Right now a lot of our success is pointed towards Ben and Tommy but Campbell Wolf has come in and provided solid leadership as well as consistent play on the course. Zach Place and Luc Warnock both played solid at times this week. For Zach to hit 18 greens and shoot 70 today was a huge boost for our team as we finished out the tournament."

NIU heads to Vero Beach, Fla. for its next tournament, the Quail Valley Collegiate Invitational, Oct. 16-17.
