MIT neuroscientist shares 4 things she never does to eliminate ‘brain fog and forgetfulness’ - CNBC

adanyabegini.blogspot.com

The alarm goes off. You get dressed, grab your coffee, and head to work. But by lunchtime, you start to feel disorganized. You reread emails because you lack focus and mental clarity.

There's nothing worse than brain fog. In addition to stress and lack of sleep, it can be caused by the immune system creating an inflammatory response in the brain. This can lead to symptoms like poor concentration and memory, or difficulty making decisions.

As a neuroscientist, I study the causes of brain fog and forgetfulness. To avoid them, here are four things I never do:

1. I never let my body get tense for too long.

Even if you think you're relaxed, your body may be physically tense (e.g., stiff neck, back or shoulder pain). This can be a result of stress from things like unfinished tasks or looming deadlines.

So when I notice that my body is tense, I immediately do an exercise called "box breathing":

  1. Inhale through your nose as you slowly count to four seconds.
  2. Hold your breath for a count of four seconds.
  3. Exhale through your nose, releasing all the air from your lungs, as you slowly count to four seconds.
  4. Hold your breath for a count of four seconds.
  5. Repeat for at least four rounds.

Box breathing is a simple way to help calm your brain. Studies also show that it can reduce levels of cortisol, which is the chemical produced when the body is under stress.

2. I never use screens one hour before bedtime.

As tempting as it might be to scroll through Instagram or watch TV before bedtime, these activities can be too stimulating for the brain.

Instead, I try to read a book before turning out the lights. If that doesn't help me sleep, I do a "relaxation body scan," squeezing and releasing muscles — starting at my toes and all the way up to my head.

Ideally, we need about eight hours of sleep a night. More than that can lead to a depressed mood, and less than that doesn't give the brain enough time to rest and reset.

3. I never load up on glucose.

If your gut isn't healthy, your brainpower can falter, too. I strengthen my gut-brain axis by maintaining a diet rich in hydrating foods, healthy fats and digestible protein.

Most important of all, I try to avoid sugar. Your brain uses glucose (sugar) as fuel, but refined carbohydrates like high fructose corn syrup found in sodas are not good sources of fuel. Your brain gets a burst of too much glucose, then too little.

This can lead to irritability, tiredness, mental confusion, and impaired judgment.

I also eat foods rich in magnesium — whole grains, leafy greens, dried beans and legumes — to help regulate my mood and sleep cycle. And I make sure to have my last caffeinated drink of the day before 10:00 a.m.

4. I never go a day without meditating.

I meditate for at least 12 minutes a day.

Doing this at nighttime can help mitigate brain fog the next day:

  1. Remove all distractions from your room.
  2. Sit or lie down in a comfortable position.
  3. Take deep breaths.
  4. Quietly observe your thoughts.
  5. Whatever thoughts come, simply acknowledge them return your focus to your breathing.

If you don't like to meditate, you can do a mindful activity such as cooking or taking a quiet walk.

I also recommend coming up with a mantra that you can say in the morning, like: "Brain fog is a state of mind. I will go to bed early tonight and be fine tomorrow."

By articulating your goals to yourself out loud, you can start to be more intentional about changing your habits. And through that repetition, your brain and body will start to follow suit.

Frozen Pizza Taste Test: Here Are the Best - The New York Times

adanyabegini.blogspot.com

To find out, four hungry Times staff members staged a blind tasting.

With just purĂ©ed tomatoes, fresh mozzarella and basil as toppings, a margherita is the pizza most reliant on high-quality ingredients. Because it can’t hide under blankets of part-skim mozzarella or highly seasoned sauce, the flavors of dough, tomato and cheese have to shine.

What happens when you subject those elements to a freezer, then ship them around the country?

To find out, I collected three of my New York Times Food and Cooking colleagues and 11 nationally available margherita pies for a blind taste test at our kitchen studio. The other testers were Eric Kim, a columnist and recipe writer; Vaughn Vreeland, a supervising producer for NYT Cooking video; and Cathy Lo, an editor.

All of the pies came from independent pizza makers dedicated to Neapolitan-style pies, not from global food companies like NestlĂ© or Rich’s. Four were nationally available pies produced for major grocery stores: Roberta’s, Table 87, Talia di Napoli and Genio Della Pizza. Then we ordered all of the margherita pies available from artisanal pizzerias outside New York City through Goldbelly, an online marketplace for specialty food products: Pizzeria Delfina in San Francisco, Pizzana in Los Angeles, Pizzeria Bianco in Phoenix, La Piazza al Forno in Glendale, Ariz., Varuni Napoli in Atlanta and Dough in San Antonio. (We also included a New York stalwart, Joe & Pat’s on Staten Island, to see how its margherita stacked up.)

The differences among the pies were astounding. Some had a thick schmear of tomato, others just a scrape of orange sauce; a few crusts had the puffy, raised edge characteristic of Neapolitan pizza, but others were flat, like Midwestern tavern pizza.

Surprisingly, the handmade pies shipped directly from pizzerias — often at a price of $30 or more for a single 14-inch (or so) pie — were not necessarily better tasting than the $11 supermarket ones.

Here, in ascending order, is how the four mass-market premium pizzas stacked up.

Heather Black for The New York Times. Food Stylist: Frances Boswell.

The generous slices of mozzarella melted into lovely puddles, but the skimpy tomato coating beneath them got lost. Roberta’s famous crust seemed to have dried out in the freezing process; overall, it lacked flavor. “Not a fan,” Vaughn said.

Heather Black for The New York Times. Food Stylist: Frances Boswell.

Eric fell hard for the first bite of Table 87’s tomato purĂ©e. Our panel agreed that this was the punchiest tomato element on any of the pies, but Vaughn pronounced it too sweet, “the Lunchables of frozen pizza.” With its crackerlike crust, this pizza did seem likely to appeal to kids.

Heather Black for The New York Times. Food Stylist: Frances Boswell.

This was the prettiest, most Italian-looking pizza of the bunch, something you might actually serve to adults. “You can smell the char,” Cathy said. That crucial element of a classic Neapolitan crust rarely appeared at the tasting. We liked Talia’s blistered, puffy edge, but the toppings had only faint flavor.

Heather Black for The New York Times. Food Stylist: Frances Boswell.

This pizza, with its lavishly oily and salty crust, smartly avoided the dryness that plagued its competitors. “Am I getting Cheese Nips?” asked Eric, who praised its aroma, a key part of the pizza-eating experience. The proportion of tomato to crust felt right, and the crust had sourdough flavor, something we missed in the other pies.

Among the direct-from-pizzeria pies, the best cheese pull belonged to Pizzeria Bianco, and the most successful combination of chewy and crisp crust came from Pizzana. Best overall went to Delfina, in the Bay Area, for its clear, fresh flavors.

The eternal X factor in frozen pizza is what you do to it at home. Each pizza included reheating instructions, none of which were the same, and oven temperatures ranged from 425 to 500 degrees. The brands are divided on whether to use a pizza stone, a baking sheet or just an oven rack, and they disagreed about whether pizza can or should thaw before heating.

It’s fine to let these premium pies thaw; in fact, like most foods, they will cook more evenly. If you don’t have a stone and don’t want to risk spilling onto the oven floor, stick a baking sheet in the oven while it’s heating, turn it upside down and slide the pizza onto the back. Then keep an eye on it until it’s cooked the way you like it.

“I think most of us know what pizza looks like when it’s done,” said Chris Bianco, the founder of Pizzeria Bianco. “People are smart, and directions are overrated.”

Trader Joe's asked customers to rank their nine top products. Here they are - CNN

adanyabegini.blogspot.com
New York CNN  —

Trader Joe’s asked its customers a simple question: If you were to spend the rest of your life on a deserted island, which nine Trader Joe’s products would you take with you?

More than 18,000 customers responded to its 14th annual survey ranking the grocery store’s most popular items in nine different categories.

There were some caveats this year: Gone from the running were five products that have won many times in the past (think Mandarin Orange Chicken and dark chocolate peanut butter cups), and instead are featured in its Product Hall of Fame.

The first Trader Joe’s opened in Pasadena, California, in 1967. Its founder Joe Coulombe (yes, Joe was a real guy), was a convenience store owner who wanted to open a grocery chain to appeal to a niche market of well-educated, well-traveled consumers. The idea led him to create a cult-favorite grocery empire.

Here are the products customers voted their favorites, in categories from cheese to entrees.

Top Overall

Chili & Lime Flavored Rolled Tortilla Chips, spicy corn chips, swept the competition this year, taking home the top prize. Runners-up included the hash browns, chicken soup dumplings, Everything but the Bagel sesame seasoning blend, and chocolate croissants.

The chips also won in the poll’s favorite snack category. Customers were also fans of the Organic Elote Corn Chip Dippers, Organic Corn Chip Dippers, World’s Puffiest White Cheddar Corn Puffs and Crunchy Curls, which were all among the top vote-getters.

Top Beverage

The Sparkling Honeycrisp Apple Juice was the fans’ favorite beverage, though it is seasonal. The canned drink is a simple three-ingredient blend of apple juice, water and bubbles.

Following is the Triple Ginger Brew, Sparkling Peach Black Tea with peach juice, Sparkling Cranberry & Ginger Beverage and the Non-Dairy Brown Sugar Oat Creamer.

Top Cheese

Trader Joe's Cheddar Cheese with Caramelized Onions

Now that Hall of Famer Unexpected Cheddar is no longer an option in the poll, the store’s cheddar cheese with caramelized onions took home top accolades.

See the full list of customer choice award winners

Runners-up included Syrah Soaked Toscano, seasonal Baked Lemon Ricotta, Blueberry & Vanilla ChĂšvre and its various bries.

Top Entree

Replacing the longtime Mandarin Orange Chicken is Trader Joe’s Butter Chicken – spiced chicken in a tomato and cream sauce with basmati rice.

Indian is popular with Trader Joe’s customers. Second runner-up was Chicken Tikka Masala, followed by Kung Pao Chicken, Butternut Squash Mac & Cheese and BBQ Teriyaki Chicken.

Top Household Item

Seasonal candles won out in this category. Its seasonal scents include Peony Blossom, Cedar Balsam, Honeycrisp Apple and Vanilla Pumpkin.

Runners-up: Daily Facial Sunscreen, Ultra-Moisturizing Hand Cream, Tea Tree Tingle Shampoo & Conditioner, and Shea Butter & Coconut Oil Hair Mask.

Top Produce

Unsurprisingly, customers voted bananas as their top choice. The chain is known for its 25-cent organic bananas and 19-cent regular bananas. Following choices were Teeny Tiny Avocados, Honeycrisp Apples, Brussels Sprouts and Organic Carrots of Many Colors.

Top Dessert

The tiny and crunchy Hold the Cone! Mini Ice Cream Cones won top dessert, followed by Danish Kringle, Sublime Ice Cream Sandwiches, Chocolate Lava Cakes and Brookie.

Top vegan/vegetarian

Trader Joe's Vegan Kale, Cashew & Basil Pesto spread onto a grilled Portabella mushroom burger, topped with roasted red peppers and fresh greens

Among its many vegan and vegetarian options, the Vegan Kale, Cashew & Basil Pesto came out on top. Vegetable Fried Rice, Beefless Bulgogi, Palak Paneer, Cauliflower Gnocchi followed.

Drake FINALLY picks a winner: Rapper successfully wagers $1million on the Chiefs to beat Bengals - Daily Mail

‘And Just Like That’ Season 2: ‘Sex and the City’ Spinoff Release Date, Cast, Plot Details - Yahoo Entertainment

When is the And Just Like That season 2 release date? Fans of the Sex and the City spinoff series have been waiting patiently for the next season ever since HBO Max announced the show’s renewal in March 2022. Series stars Sarah Jessica Parker, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon have also remained quiet about the premiere date. So, when can fans expect to watch their favorite show?

Keep reading to find out everything we know about the season 2 premiere!

When Is the ‘And Just Like That’ Season 2 Release Date?

HBO Max has not confirmed the premiere date for the second season but revealed the show is expected to air sometime in 2023. However, the streaming giant has teased viewers with a few sneak peeks at the show.

In January 2023, HBO Max shared a still image via Instagram of Sarah’s character, Carrie Bradshaw, walking down the street with her former on-off boyfriend, Aiden Shaw. Without providing too many details, the streamer simply captioned its post, “Shh. Don’t tell anyone.”

‘And Just Like That’ Season 2 Release Date: Cast, Plot
‘And Just Like That’ Season 2 Release Date: Cast, Plot

Is There a Season 2 Trailer?

The stars are currently filming the second season of the show. Therefore, an official teaser trailer has not been released yet.

Who Is in the ‘And Just Like That’ Cast?

In addition to the series leads, Deadline announced that John Corbett would reprise his role as Aiden in season 2. Since he and Carrie are former lovebirds, viewers expect to see a possible romance develop between the two, as Carrie lost her husband, Mr. Big, who was portrayed by Chris Noth, when he died of a heart attack.

After the season 1 finale aired in February 2022, executive producer Michael Patrick King told the outlet why the creative team decided to wait until the second season to bring back Aiden.

“It really just felt like this was a lot for Carrie. This season was a lot, Michael explained, referring to the first season’s storyline. “We wanted to get her through [Big’s death] and into the light — the last episode is called, ‘Seeing the Light.’ We wanted to get her out. [Aidan’s return] is a big storyline that everybody at home wrote that we had never intended.”

Since actress Kim Cattrall previously made it clear that she cut ties with the Sex and the City franchise and did not appear in season 1, multiple outlets assume that she will not reprise her role as Samantha.

Also returning are actors Sara Ramirez, Mario Cantone, David Eigenberg and Evan Handler.

What Is the ‘And Just Like That Season 2 Plot?

Season 1 unpacked Carrie’s grief following the devastating loss of Big. His death shocked viewers, especially because it happened in the first episode.

The series ended on a cliffhanger with Charlotte reuniting with her family, Miranda joining Che in Los Angeles and Carrie deciding to go to Paris, scattering Big’s ashes from the bridge.

People Once Again Can't Believe Mia Goth Sounds Like This - BuzzFeed

Everyone, including myself, seems to be really into Mia Goth lately.

I can't tell you how many times I hear people talking about Pearl and how she's the new horror queen.

She really IS the moment.

When Oscar nominations were announced last week, some people were really upset she wasn't nominated.

Twitter: @lifeisasawtrap

“I think that it’s very political and that it’s not entirely based on the quality of a project per se," she says.

“I think there’s a lot going on there, a lot of cooks in the kitchen when it comes to nominations and categories that are recognized. Maybe I shouldn’t say that either but I think that’s true. I think a lot of people know that."

"I think a change is necessary, a shift should take place. If they want to engage with the wider public, it would be of benefit," she finishes.

Her voice.

1) I was not ready for Mia Goth to sound like that. 2) Her performance in Pearl was the biggest Oscar snub. Her monologue at the end was absolutely soul shattering. https://t.co/Om2rRRvwik

Every time a Mia Goth interview clip goes viral, it's all about the voice.

ive never heard her natural voice and it is in no way what i was expecting https://t.co/sR4ipy7UMb

People call her voice "bewildering."

She speaking facts, but Mia Goth has the most bewildering voice https://t.co/pN3RxnB8De

NASCAR legend Jeff Gordon has smart advice for everyday drivers - Fox News

adanyabegini.blogspot.com

NASCAR legend Jeff Gordon had a message for those driving too slow in the left lane – speed up or get out of the way.

Gordon appeared on "The Tonight Show" with Jimmy Fallon on Wednesday night and the comedian asked the four-time NASCAR Cup Series champion about his driving habits.

"I feel like I’m an excellent driver," Gordon said when asked how he was driving to the mall.

Fallon then asked if he was a "left-lane guy all the way."

"I’m left lane if I’m passing. You don’t belong in the left lane unless you’re doing something," Gordon said. "I mean I don’t always hang in the left lane. If I’m not in a hurry, I’ll go in the middle lane, I’ll go in the right lane.

"But let’s be honest, I’m more left lane."

Gordon was one of the most influential NASCAR drivers to come up through the circuit. He was the 1993 Winston Cup Rookie of the Year after winning the Busch Series Rookie of the Year in 1991. He built a dominant race career and won the NASCAR championship in 1995, 1997, 1998 and 2001. His last win came in 2015 at the Goody’s Headache Relief Shot 500 in Martinsville.

Sustainable Tourism Could Look Like This - OZY

“Help save the environment. Please reuse the towels.”

I can’t think of the last time I checked into a hotel that didn’t have some politely worded variation of that message, as if doing our small part is really even optional. And when I see such a message, I think about Koh Yao Noi.

Out in Thailand’s Phang Nga Bay — on the edge of an incredible natural aquatic preserve between tourist hotspots Phuket and Krabi — Koh Yao Noi (Little Long Island) is still largely a locals’ island, more focused on agriculture than becoming a bucket-list travel destination. There is no welcome center, nor scooters for hire awaiting visitors upon arrival; for that matter, the island is still only accessible by boat.

Tourism has tiptoed in over the years, yet the chic hotels and luxury resorts here largely share a like-minded, sustainability-focused goal to tread lightly on this sublime southern Thai edge of the Andaman Sea.

From immersive, eco-minded guest excursions and activities to the myriad ways these properties strive for sustainability — including recycling, waste management, water conservation, growing food onsite and working with local producers — Koh Yao Noi demonstrates that earth-friendly tourism doesn’t have to be a proverbial island.

Get Your Hands Dirty (and Grab Eggs for Breakfast Too)

Thanks to the past few pandemic years, we’ve all become more aware of the concept of a global supply chain. Imagine what an island’s supply chain looks like when it involves operating full-service hotels and resorts with anywhere from half a dozen to 70 rooms, including family options and honeymoon suites.

This makes it remarkable that ecolodge The Hideout has found a way to source some 90% of its food from Koh Yao Noi itself. Because the island is so agriculturally rich, the properties on the island have close working relationships with local producers, and several grow their own food.

At the onsite farm at Six Senses Yao Noi, guests can meet the resident chickens, ducks and goats, and visit the mushroom hut and raised garden beds. And the farm at Paradise Koh Yao Resort and TreeHouse Villas, which are sister properties on the same land, grows everything from morning glory — a spinach-like Thai speciality that’s delicious stir-fried — to other seasonal fruits and vegetables, including watermelons, bananas, papayas and staple Thai herbs and spices.

Guests love that they get to collect eggs, mushrooms and herbs from the gardens to bring to the chefs at breakfast, says Khun Thanattha (Khun Van), sustainability director at Six Senses Yao Noi.

But shortening the supply chain isn’t just about incoming goods — it’s also about minimizing outgoing goods. This setup requires resourceful self-reliance. It also provides opportunities for guests, especially young guests, to get their hands dirty.

“Kids love to take the leftover vegetable seeds and pieces from a meal — such as from hot peppers, shallots and coriander roots — and help replant them in our garden,” says Khun Supaporn Potpradit (Khun Sue), executive assistant manager at Paradise Koh Yao and TreeHouse Villas. Natural fertilizer is made from eggshells, coffee grounds and coconut husks, she adds.

Nothing is wasted: An earthworm farm at Six Senses’ Earth Lab turns food scraps into nutrient-rich soil for landscaping and gardening, and even the compost wastewater is used as a fertilizer. Also in the Earth Lab, a glass-crushing machine turns wine and beer bottles into small glass pieces for projects around the property, including pavement laying and planter decorations. Leftover candles are melted down and repoured, and a proprietary herbal mosquito repellent is produced and used around the resort.

Khun Van cites the repellent as one of her favorite Earth Lab projects, along with the reverse osmosis drinking water produced onsite. “All the water used within the resort and host compound comes from our own water reservoir, which makes us entirely self-sufficient,” she adds.

Community Is at the Heart

UNESCO’s Sustainable Travel Pledge cites five signs of sustainable tourism: reduced single-use plastics, reduced waste, water conservation, energy conservation and community engagement.

The immersive experiences and eco-activities on Koh Yao Noi take these principles to heart. Visitors can traipse through a rice paddy, visit a working rubber tree farm, track down a few of the island’s protected oriental pied hornbills and visit the protected “grandfather tree” within the lush national park on the island’s north shore. “It’s a great way to support area businesses and show our guests the true Koh Yao way of life and culture,” says Khun Sue.

Cape Kudu Hotel offers a full-day excursion that taps into local life: island-hopping in Phang Nga Bay in a traditional longtail boat, with stops that include Roi Island and a magical, sheltered bay on Koh Kudu, with a chance for swimming and a short guided hike. Then it’s off to collect what local fishermen caught for lunch, which is cooked over open flames, Thai-style, on Toh Baut Cave Island.

A sustainable ethos is unattainable without reciprocal community connection. The handful of hotels and resorts on Koh Yao Noi — which is less than 1/10th the size of Phuket, with 1/100th of the population — employs mostly local staff, and many venues offer ongoing professional training. Funds generated from Cape Kudu’s boat excursions helped purchase the island community’s first fire truck. Six Senses, in conjunction the Imagine Thailand Foundation, has installed 35 reverse osmosis water systems in communities throughout the region. The resorts also work with Trash Hero, an organization seeking to reduce single-use plastic waste.

The conservation projects for the local hornbill species, which is considered critically endangered, is a jewel in the island’s sustainability crown. “Being monogamous, the species has significantly dwindled in numbers over the years,” Khun Van explains. Several of the resorts have built nests for the birds using repurposed timber from around the island.

For all the measurable sustainability initiatives by the island’s hotels and resorts, Koh Yao Noi — and Thailand in general — has a lot of challenges when it comes to a greener, more sustainable future. Single-use plastics and the resulting trash and marine plastic waste is still a massive issue throughout the country and its islands, although there are signs the tide is turning in the right direction.

As one example, Thailand has started rolling out bans on certain types of single-use plastics, such as plastic shopping bags and styrofoam takeout containers, with an eye to removing plastic waste from landfills by 2027. Meanwhile, grassroots efforts on Koh Yao Noi have, over the last five years, led to recycling more than 600 tons of plastics and other materials, the sale of which goes directly back into community initiatives. Renewable energy projects are also in development at some of the island’s hotels and resorts, as well as throughout the country.

The efforts on Koh Yao Noi might not be replicable in urban hotspots or regions with less natural abundance. But there’s a blueprint here that inspires. Think about that the next time you spot a sign requesting you to please hang up your towel.
