Skyler Howes gave up the lead in the Dakar at the tenth stage. The Husqvarna rider was 17th today at 7m38s off the winner, Ross Branch (Hero MotoSports), and was overtaken by Kevin Benavides (Red Bull KTM) in the overall standings to drop to second - he is 1m29s off his rival.
The American told the official Dakar website that it was a short but challenging race, particularly with the technical areas in the dunes: 'Today was 100% dunes. We went into two little, tiny valleys to validate some checkpoints, but otherwise some really technical dunes. Yeah, a short stage, but still demanding. I think the times are going to be really close today… I just wanted to make it through this stage today and get ready for the marathon stage.'
For Howes, the priority was to complete the day without major mishaps given the stage distance: 'On short stages like this, you can definitely lose it, but trying to win it is not necessary. So I wanted to take it easy and complete this one, and get a feel for the dunes. We've been on a few dunes so far, but nothing like this: the Empty Quarter is crazy and the dunes here are very difficult and strange to read, so I played it safe.'
Finally, the rider talked about a small incident he had, downplaying it: 'I had a crash, I'm sure you'll see [laughs] - it was super funny. I tried to have fun and the landing was a bit soft. But I had a good day'.
