‘No storm like this:’ Jefferson County begins cleanup as residents worry about power outages - WCTV

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) - By midday Thursday, the familiar Florida heat was already baking the volunteers stationed at the Monticello Public Library.

The group helping provide water, MREs, and other supplies to a growing line of cars, all filled with friends and neighbors forced to live without power.

As of 6 p.m. Thursday, almost all of Jefferson County remained without power, joining Taylor, Madison, Suwannee, Lafayette, Dixie and Hamilton Counties.

Tri-County Electric and Duke Energy provide power for most residents in Jefferson, Madison and Taylor Counties.

A Tri-County spokesperson told WCTV they were telling customers to prepare for up to two weeks without power, but were hopeful lights would turn on much sooner.

Duke Energy announced Thursday evening plans to restore 95% of power to customers by 11:30 p.m. Sunday.

Jefferson County Sheriff Mac McNeill said the cleanup effort would need to be extensive.

“There’s been no storm like this come through this area, so for sure this is probably the most damage we’ve ever seen,” he told WCTV.

Sallie Andrews lives off Ashville Highway. She rode out the storm in a shelter, but she was shocked at what she found at her home when she returned.

“When we came home that morning, the whole yard was nothing but trees, part of my house the tree is sticking inside the house,” she said. “I’ve never seen anything like this. There are so many powerlines down. Hard to get through roads out there where we live.”

Andrews said she was grateful for the volunteers handing out supplies given the tough road ahead.

Shonteria Hills lives in Monticello, and showed up to the library hoping there was a place to cool off. But the library, like the rest of the town, was without power.

Hills said she was nervous how living without power would go.

“That’s going to be very tough. That’s going to be very tough living in an area where it is extremely hot as it is,” she said. “We’re already in the heat. No air. No food. We really don’t know how to survive this. We really need answers about when the power is going to be back on.”

Duke Energy is staging crews at the old Greyhound track north of Monticello. The company said they had 5,000 people working to restore the power across the state.

2023 Week 1 Unwatchable Filth: Oh, Hokie, not like this - Roll Bama Roll

Not all low-scoring games are necessarily good games, or even competitive. Sure, you occasionally get 2011 Alabama-LSU, a defensive showdown for the ages where 21 of the 22 starters on both squads eventually played in the NFL.

But, more often than not, you get the infamous Tommy Tuberville 3-2 special in Starkville, a game that still hurts my soul when I reflect upon it.

The teams went 3-30 on third down, 1-4 on fourth down. The average 3D to-make was 3rd and 8. The two QBs combined to go 24 of 51, and averaged 4.4 yards per attempt — State averaged 3 yards per attempt, which is awful even for a rushing attempt. Speaking of, the two teams combined to average 2.7 yards per rush — with Mississippi State posting an anemic 1.3 YPC. Auburn was penalized a dozen times. The teams combined for two blocked kicks and four turnovers. There were no kick returns. The game was decided by a field goal vs. a safety. The kickers went 1-of-4. And even the punters were off, combining for just 39 YPA on an ungodly 18 punts.

It truly was worse than you remember.

You don’t expect one of those to cross your path every season. But, we are fortunate in that we may once again receive just such a contest this Saturday. And once again, it will be borne not of defensive prowess, rather offensive ineptitude. I give you:

Old Dominion at Virginia Tech

On paper, this is a game you sort of shrug your shoulders at. It doesn’t look too foul, at first blush. Just a bog-standard bad G5 team collecting a paycheck for a road trip beatdown. Old Dominion is a genuinely awful FBS program — and they weren’t much better as an FCS team. In fact, they had just two winning seasons the entire decade before, and have collected one 10-win season in fifteen years. So, ho-hum, just a regular Big Boy beating, right?

Nope, this one requires we dig a bit deeper.

See, these teams met last year in an absolute farcical experience. Ostensibly, it was an upset for ODU. But I would suggest that there were no winners, despite a 20-17 final score.

It was a contest where the Monarchs averaged 2 yards per carry, and not one of the five running backs on the day hit 4 YPC. In fact, only two went over 3 YPC. Old Dominion threw the ball 35 times for...165 yards. Meanwhile, they completed just a third of their passes. Third down was an exercise in futility: just 2 of 15, and ODU crossed midfield, without the benefit of a turnover, just two times on the afternoon. The offense overall? Just 3.7 yards per play. They punted 8 times, and their kicker had three times the yardage of their quarterback.

Virginia Tech outgained ODU over 23:1, but generated just 17 points. Not that it was an offensive explosion. No, it’s that ODU’s offense was that inept. VT had fewer than 350 yards on the day. The teams combined for five turnovers, including Virginia Tech’s cromulent four interceptions against a Monarchs squad that collected just 12 all season. ODU was among the nation’s worst secondaries too: surrendering 8.2 YPA, 65% completions, and a QBR near 150. And special teams? Hardly that. Beamer Ball, this ain’t. The Hokies averaged a sad, Alabama-esque 37.8 yards per punt and just 1.3 yards per punt return.

Overall team poopiness? Try this on for size: In a combined 143 plays, 69 of them went for no gain, was an incomplete pass, or was a tackle for loss. Six trips to the redzone? Two field goals, one touchdown, and a 50% failure rate. Throw in an ungodly 14 passes defended and knocked down to go with a 44% overall pass completion percentage and four interceptions, and that tells you there was a whole lot of bad throwin...coupled with coaches determined to keep doing it again and again and again.

Even conceding that was terrible, what makes the 2023 iteration as bad, perhaps even worse?

  • Because last year, when these teams met, ODU was a veteran group — it had 15 seniors on the two-deep. This year, just seven total starters return. Losses include:
  • All three QBs with experience — they had to hit the portal to find a guy with any experience: he is from Fordham. He has 13 career passes.
  • That bad running game? Well, it’ll be even worse this season: all four running backs left.
  • Their leading tackler? Gone. 75% of the secondary? Gone.
  • Offensive staff? Gone. A new one is in play, and their first game is a trip to Blacksburg.
  • Offensive line? 80% of them are gone.
  • Wide receivers? Three of the top four are gone.
  • Front seven? Lost its top six tacklers.

And even with those veterans? Old Dominion was still just 115th in total offensive efficiency, 129th in explosiveness, 127th in per-play efficiency, and 96th in drive efficiency — and 116th in scoring offense: a miserable 19.5 ppg

Virginia Tech is hardly better.

Brent Pry, the new coach at VT, spent his career as a DC...at Penn State, perhaps one of the most stodgy, run-first programs in the nation. And it showed. Last year, Tech scored fewer than 28 points in an ungodly ten of their contests. It was 119th in total offense, 126th in scoring offense, and 96th or worst in literally every offensive category in the country.

So, how do you fix that deficit? Why naturally you bring in a career TE coach who has never called plays. You give him a thin offensive line to work behind. A running QB who can’t throw, a transfer passing QB who can’t stop throwing interceptions...and you try to adopt Urban Meyers offense and make them fit the pieces you have in place.

No, that’s not a joke.

Sometimes games are bad because the teams are bad. And sometimes they’re bad because, for whatever reason, one or both staffs just get bogged down in ineptitude, and are happier than pigs in a sty to wallow around and hope they have more points at the end of the day. This is going to be just such a game, because these are two such teams.

ODU is a 16.5 underdog in Blacksburg, and the totals on this one are 49.5. I’d be absolutely stunned if this goes over. The winner is likely to have somewhere in the 21-24 point range...if they’re lucky.

Collegeville Orchards: What Does The Apple Crop Look Like This Fall - WJON News

COLLEGEVILLE (WJON News) - After a hot summer, this year’s produce is headed to customer’s tables.

Collegeville Orchards is planning to open this weekend and stay open through at least the end of October.

Co-owner Todd Beumer says this year’s apples will be smaller than average.

We're noticing some of our early apples are smaller in size. The drought has something to do with that, and also, everything bloomed extremely late this year. Usually, we start seeing the first blossoms around May 5th. This year, we didn't see blossoms until the 17th.

Beumer says his pumpkin crop matured much earlier than normal, and he hopes the recent rains will keep the plants alive until harvest time. The orchard’s vegetables struggled as well.

Everything's been a struggle with watering, that's kind of the way it is in dry years. It's a catch-22; the weeds don't grow as fast if we can spot water, but if we overhead the water it seems like the weeds grow faster than the plants.

Collegeville Orchards will open for the season this weekend with fresh produce and a petting zoo, and they plan on starting the hayrides next weekend.

Zoo: We've 'Never Experienced an Accident Like This' - Newser

There are thought to be roughly 1,000 Siberian tigers in the world, the majority of those held in captivity. Now, there's one fewer. A critically endangered Siberian tiger held at a Colorado zoo died in a "freak accident" Friday during preparations for a dental procedure, ABC News reports. After receiving a dose of anesthesia, the 2-year-old female named Mila fell off a bench and suffered a spinal injury from which she could not recover, according to officials at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in Colorado Springs. Mila had jumped up on the waist-high bench "where she began to lay down and peacefully let the anesthetic drugs take effect," according to the Tuesday statement announcing her death. Seconds later, she began to slip.

"It was impossible from a human safety standpoint to stop her tragic fall," the zoo said. "She could have slid off from that height a hundred times and landed in a variety of other positions and been unaffected," noted head veterinarian Dr. Eric Klaphake. He said officials "quickly entered her den when it was safe and diligently tried for 40 minutes to give her life-saving care." The young Siberian tiger, also known as an Amur tiger, arrived from the Toronto Zoo in March, per the Denver Post. After much training, the "feisty and intelligent tiger" was "getting so close to being out where guests could see her," said an animal care manager at the zoo. But a recently discovered dental infection needed to be addressed first.

"This was not just a cavity, and it could not be left untreated, as it was advancing to her sinuses," zoo officials said, noting the infection could've been fatal. "You can plan and plan and things still go wrong," said Bob Chastain, the zoo's president and CEO. "We have successfully anesthetized countless tigers in this same den and have never experienced an accident like this." Another female Siberian tiger named Savelli died at the zoo in 2021 due to complications after an artificial insemination procedure, per ABC. The zoo said the two deaths, though unrelated, show how the "fragile state of their species is glaring." Just 350 to 450 Siberian tigers are thought to remain in native habitats, according to the Denver Zoo. (Another died in a fight at a UK zoo.)

We’ve never seen a phone with a screen like this before - Digital Trends

TCL 40 NXTPAPER LTE only and 5G budget smartphones with ePaper-like color display.
TCL

All efforts to relieve eye strain and fatigue from excessive phone usage have been directed through two distinct routes. Brands that refuse to compromise a display’s colors and brightness have added measures to tame vibrant colors through blue light filters or monochrome modes. Meanwhile, those making devices primarily for reading have opted for paper-like displays.

Both approaches have inescapable pros and cons, but TCL is now taking the middle route, being the first brand to offer a smartphone display that is as fluid as an LCD or OLED, but also as lulling as electronic paper or e-paper screens.

TCL’s budget smartphones in the 40 series feature its proprietary “NXTPAPER” display technology, previously seen on some of its tablets and laptops. Designed to alleviate eye strain from continuous phone usage, the “e-paper-like” color display comes with an antireflective layer over a standard LCD and results in a bright and useful screen that is not arduous to look at, especially in lowlight. The display is mated to a sensor that automatically adjusts the warmth of the colors based on the ambiance and the time of the day. A bunch of software options can dial down the colors further, allowing you to read on the phone for longer.

Besides the unique display, the TCL 40 NXTPAPER series phones strictly cater to the midrange buyer. Here’s what each of them has to offer.

TCL 40 NXTPAPER

TCL 40 NXTPAPER LTE only smartphone with ePaper like color display.
TCL

The first of the two phones is the TCL 40 NXTPAPER, a 4G-only phone with a 6.78-inch Full HD+ display. It is powered by a MediaTek Helio G88 chipset and 8GB of RAM. You get 256GB of storage that can be expanded up to 2TB with a microSD card.

A 50MP primary camera on the back is complemented by a 5MP ultrawide-angle lens and a 2MP macro camera. On the front, you get a 32MP selfie camera inside a hole-punch cutout.

A 5,000mAh battery drives the TCL 40 NXTPAPER, which can be replenished with a 33-watt fast charger included in the box. The phone also gets dual speakers, along with HD audio tuning by DTS.

TCL 40 NXTPAPER 5G

TCL 40 NXTPAPER 5G budget smartphones with ePaper like color display.
TCL

Besides the LTE-only variant, the TCL 40 NXTPAPER also gets a 5G model that doesn’t have much in common with the other model. The 5G variant is powered by MediaTek Dimensity 700, along with 6GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage, which can be expanded up to 1TB using microSD. It gets a less vibrant 6.6-inch HD+ display with a teardrop notch that houses an 8MP camera.

Like the 4G model, the TCL 40 NXTPAPER 5G gets 50MP primary and 2MP macro cameras. Instead of the ultrawide-angle feature, however, it gets a 2MP depth sensor, which the phone could have done well without.

The 5G variant gets a similarly powerful battery, with a 5,010mAh rating, but without any fast charging. It supports a peak charging speed of 15W, but TCL only supplies a 10W charger in the box.

Both phones have Android 13 with a guaranteed update to Android 14 — but not beyond. Both also offer NFC support and are equipped with side-facing fingerprint scanners.

Coming to Europe first

TCL will first launch the 40 NXTPAPER smartphones in Europe, starting with the LTE model arriving in September for 199 euros ($215). The 5G variant will join it in October for 249 euros ($270).

The company hasn’t yet confirmed any plans to release the two phones in the U.S., but says they will be available in more global markets over the coming months.

Darwin Nunez had longed for a moment like this - The Athletic

Mobbed by his triumphant team-mates, serenaded by the euphoric travelling Kop and warmly embraced by his appreciative manager, this was the most dazzling of match-winning cameos — Darwin Nunez had taken Liverpool from the jaws of a damaging defeat to the ecstasy of a dramatic victory over Newcastle United.

Nunez made some important contributions during a mixed first season at Anfield, but none as eye-catching or as valuable as his heroic impact as a substitute at St James’ Park. Not even close.

With Jurgen Klopp’s side both a goal down and a man down following the dismissal of captain Virgil van Dijk, they needed a miracle during the closing stages and the most expensive signing in the club’s history stepped up and delivered.

Tired of being stuck on the fringes, Nunez took decisive action to make himself the main man. He became the first Liverpool player in the Premier League era to come off the bench and score both an equaliser and the winner in the same game.

There was real feeling behind those two lethal strikes that arrowed past Nick Pope. “He was obviously fired up,” smiled Klopp, who admitted Nunez had been hurt by being left out of the starting line-up for the opening three matches of the season.

His frustration was understandable having seen himself effectively slip to fifth in the pecking order of attackers behind Mohamed Salah, Cody Gakpo, Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota.

When Roberto Firmino left Liverpool this summer, Nunez jumped at the opportunity to inherit the iconic No 9 shirt.

The 24-year-old frontman, who previously wore No 27, was keen to embrace greater responsibility. He wants to be leading the line. He doesn’t want to be Klopp’s plan B.

Yet, during Liverpool’s 14-game unbeaten run dating back to early April, Nunez has started just three of them.

The issues he faced following his move from Benfica last summer for a fee potentially rising to £84million ($106m) have been well documented.

The senseless rush of blood on his home debut against Crystal Palace which resulted in a three-match ban, the injuries, the language barrier, the weight of expectation as a result of the price tag, the failings around him in a misfiring team, and the sizeable challenge of adjusting to what Klopp demanded from him tactically.

Being labelled the ‘agent of chaos’ was a back-handed compliment. He was raw and erratic. He admitted himself he needed to “calm his nerves” as too many chances went begging.

His modest tally of 15 goals in 42 appearances in all competitions in 2022-23 included nine in the Premier League, considerably below his xG (expected goals) of 14.28. For context, the xG for his clinical double against Newcastle was 0.42.

There were times last season when Klopp and Pep Lijnders, acting as the interpreter, sat him down and reassured the emotional South American that it was a long-term project and not to be too hard on himself.

Gakpo effectively became Firmino’s successor in the false nine role after slotting in seamlessly following his arrival from PSV Eindhoven in January.

The Netherlands international, who started through the middle at St James’, is much more adept at dropping deeper and helping to disrupt the opposition’s build-up, as well as linking play. That doesn’t come naturally to Nunez, who wants to operate on the shoulder of the centre-backs and burst in behind defenders.

Klopp has talked about how “counter-pressing is your ticket into this team”. Throughout pre-season, there were promising signs of Nunez being much more in tune with the players around him.

Coaching staff have been impressed by his dedication on the training field to honing his contribution to the team out of possession and he has taken on board the manager’s request to improve his English.

(Joe Prior/Visionhaus via Getty Images)

Yes, there are rough edges that need ironing out, but Sunday provided a timely reminder of the X-factor he provides: the ruthlessness as he pounced on that error from Sven Botman to slam home the equaliser before tucking away Salah’s inviting pass deep into stoppage time.

Play to his strengths and Nunez’s pace and power are a nightmare for defenders.

“I just gave him a hug and encouraged him to go out there and fight for the team,” Klopp said.

“Darwin is not happy for not starting; that’s how it is. But after the international break, we play every three days and nobody can play all the games. We have to make sure we have different options.

“We need to create a new way to play football and Darwin can be a super part of that. His key strengths are exceptional, but we need to find stability as well. For him, everything will be fine.

“Maybe it had to be like this — if Darwin wouldn’t have been that angry and had started the game, then he wouldn’t have scored two in the last few minutes. Let’s take it like that.”

During his first season at Benfica in 2020-21, Nunez netted just 14 times in 44 games. In the following campaign, he was prolific and bagged 34 in 41 matches. The hope is that he can go to the next level for Liverpool in a similar fashion.

Talk about changing the narrative. If it wasn’t for Nunez, the fallout would have focused on that wretched spell in the first half when Anthony Gordon was gifted the opener and Van Dijk was sent off soon after.

The brilliance of Alisson and a gutsy collective show of fight kept Liverpool in contention before the Uruguayan strolled on and stunned Newcastle.

“I think in my 1,000 games as a manager I never had a game like this, that’s the truth. Super special,” said Klopp, who reiterated that he expects Salah to stay put this week despite persistent interest from Al Ittihad.

Liverpool still need to do more business of their own before Friday’s deadline. Sunday doesn’t change anything on that front, but crucially, the backdrop is one of positivity with momentum intact thanks to a smarting Nunez.

How ‘And Just Like That…’ Season Three Can Actually Be Good TV - Rolling Stone

And just like that… another chaotic, traumatizing, and strangely addictive season of And Just Like That… has come to an end. Season Two introduced penis pumps and a palatial new apartment into Carrie Bradshaw’s world, plus the reappearance of her former flame Aidan Shaw and the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it return of Samantha Jones.

Ahead of the finale, it was announced that AJLT would be returning for a third season. Max’s Head of Content Sarah Aubrey said in a statement that Season Two ranks as the most-streamed Max original and the most-watched returning Max original ever. (Never underestimate the viewing power of women and gay men).

Season Two of AJLT was a bumpy ride. Early on, the dialogue was creaky and the direction of some of the characters, particularly Miranda, was completely baffling. But Episode Six, “Trick Or Treat,” provided a small glimmer of hope. Episode Seven, “February 14th” — where Aidan reappeared with a cinched waist that the queens on RuPaul’s Drag Race would be proud of — was the best episode yet. Episode Eight gave us the best scene of the show so far, when Seema and Carrie had a devastating heart-to-heart in the rain outside a hair salon.

With the show gaining momentum toward the end of Season Two, it feels like next season might be a chance to finally get more things right than wrong. What needs to change? And what does it need to do more of?

AJLT has worked best when it has found the right balance Sex and the City’s past and present, where the characters have evolved without becoming completely different people. When Aidan returned, it felt like the “old” characters fell into comfortingly familiar territory: Charlotte explored her relationship with work and motherhood, now that her children are getting older. Career-girl Miranda was suddenly single again and back in power suits. Carrie became the selfish friend we used to love to hate, driven entirely by her own reckless emotions. The Season Two finale dinner party brought together the characters from the “old” show, plus the new faces. For the first time, they were all in a room together — and it didn’t feel totally absurd.

Now that Carrie’s new world feels more convincing, Season Three will have to find ways to allow the new characters to flourish without deviating too much from what we love about the original characters. Sometimes AJLT has forgotten that it works best when Carrie is the Main Character and the central prism through which we view everyone else. In Season Three, she needs to be in the thick of it all. Personally, I would love to see her voice-over return throughout the show, not just at the beginning and end of each episode. That way, the threads that bind the characters together will be even more clear.

Speaking of original characters, the third season of AJLT will once again have to answer the “Samantha question.” In Season One, Samantha’s absence was explained in the opening minutes of the first episode and Ms. Jones made appearances via text. In Season Two, I found myself thinking of Samantha much less as I became more invested in Carrie’s current circle. So it was an interesting decision to throw Kim Cattrall back into the mix with a cameo in the finale episode right at the moment when fans had come to terms with never seeing her again. (Was it the most expensive phone call in TV history? Probably).

Now, conversations have restarted about ways that Samantha might appear on the show. Surely, she could be given solo scenes set in London and communicate with Carrie via telephone call. This was the format for most of the first movie, when the PR maven lived in Los Angeles. With more characters in AJLT, Samantha’s scenes wouldn’t have to be as regular and there would be less pressure on them. Plus, it could bring about a detente in the pop-culture Cold War of Parker vs. Cattrall

Season Three also has to address the other elephant in the room: That some of the new characters still aren’t working. Carrie and Seema’s heart-to-heart in Episode Eight helped to transform the NYC realtor into a character that fans care about. Che Diaz has calmed down a lot since Season One and, as a result, they have become more interesting. (And dare I say it… kind of endearing?). If Carrie is the Main Character, it makes sense that the friends she has brought into the fold would be the first to achieve that status. But sadly, Nya and Lisa Todd Wexley are still waiting for their breakthrough moment.

In a response to a post by journalist Louis Peitzman about the lack of scenes featuring Nya — he suggested the AJLT writers routinely forget that the law professor exists — Karen Pittman clarified that she was filming The Morning Show at the same time, so presumably had limited availability. But that doesn’t explain why LTW’s storylines were painfully lackluster, too. It takes more than a sad life event — like a divorce or miscarriage — to make the audience feel invested in a character. In fact, it’s almost harder to care about a character who is going through a tough time when you still don’t really know them. I also couldn’t help but think that, given the political climate, the show missed an opportunity to explore a character choosing to have an abortion. Season Three of AJLT needs to give Nya and LTW their “Seema moment,” otherwise the show should consider writing them out.

Trending

AJLT seems to have settled into a rhythm where the first half of each season is an ordeal to be overcome, before gradually improving toward the end. Next season, it would be nice to see the show strike the right balance of new and nostalgia right from the start. I also wish it could stop being so fearful of its audience and realize that, if people are laughing and genuinely entertained, they can forgive the odd clunky comment or storyline. Give us brutal zingers and sweeping generalizations that might offend us but we can’t help but laugh at.

I’m holding out hope that Michael Patrick King and his team of writers can build on the progress of Season Two. For reasons that aren’t entirely clear, AJLT is something I still need in my life. What other show could somehow link one character’s decision to become a Japanese monk with another’s attempt to lose his “ass virginity?” I’ll wait.

'And Just like That…' Season 2 Ending, Explained - Cosmopolitan

Hours before the release of the And Just Like That season 2 finale, Max announced the series’ renewal for a third season. Thank god. Thank god? In its second season, the Sex and the City reboot settled with the zeitgeist like a frenemy. We love it. We hate it. We love to hate it. Another season of sweet suffering. Another season of Che.

What Happened in Season 2?

With Carrie

Lady Bradshaw was reunited this season with her long-lost love, Aidan Shaw. She decided to sell her iconic apartment, partly because Aidan refused to step inside it, and opted for a larger apartment in Gramercy Park (large enough to hold two lovers plus one of the lovers’ three children).

With Miranda

This was breakup season for Miranda as she continued to navigate her separation and impending divorce from Steve, while also breaking up with Che, whose television pilot flopped, sending them into an existential tailspin. Still, Miranda will Miranda. This season, our “sexually confused alcoholic who’s in the midst of a divorce” snagged a gig at a human rights organization.

With Charlotte

Charlotte returned to the art world this year, determined to be something other than “wife” and “mom” and equally determined to fit into her Sex and the City era fashions. Before returning to art sales (and selling a painting to Sam Smith), she tried her hand at talent management as Rock’s modeling career took off. She also played DoorDasher, delivering condoms to her daughter Lily in the middle of the bomb cyclone.

What Happened in the Season 2 Finale?

The season 2 finale, “The Last Supper Part Two: EntrĂ©e,” saw our Sex and the City cast (old and new) gather in the hallowed halls of Carrie’s apartment to say goodbye. The episode opened with the long-awaited cameo call from Kim Cattrall’s Samantha. For 70 seconds, we got our girl—plus a fantastic Fendi bag—bag.

So, what else happened in the episode? Miranda and Che seemingly buried the hatchet, as did Miranda and Steve from the sands of Coney Island. LTW and Herbert mourned the loss of her surprise pregnancy. Professor Nya was elected to the American Law Institute and likely got laid by a Michelin-star chef. Anthony gave up control in the bedroom. Seema fell in love with a Marvel movie director. Carrie’s downstairs neighbor Lisette got the deal of a lifetime on the apartment every girl in New York would kill for.

Most importantly, the finale brought a big fat question mark to the relationship between Carrie and Aidan. After a scary moment with his son, Aidan asks Carrie to wait for him while he tends to his teenage sons. He asks her to wait five years, to be exact. The episode ends with Carrie and Seema on the beaches of Greece, drinking cosmopolitans. All is as it should be.

What Do We Know About Season 3?

In short, almost nothing. Of the series’ renewal, showrunner Michael Patrick King said, “We are thrilled to spend more time in the Sex and the City universe telling new stories about the lives of these relatable and aspirational characters played by these amazing actors. And Just Like That…Here comes season 3.”

As the SAG-AFTRA and Writers’ Guild strikes rage on, it is unlikely that we will hear any real news on the subject for some time. Still, we can find comfort in knowing it is coming. Someday.

‘And Just Like That’ season 2 is now streaming on Max.

A Message for 'And Just Like That...' Season 3: Please, Dear God, No More Aidan - Cosmopolitan

Like most of my fellow Sex and the City fans, when the new series And Just Like That... first aired back in 2021, the anticipation had me shaking in my Manolo Blahniks (JK, I don’t own any). But it took me back to the days of SATC gone by, when I couldn’t wait to see what epic fashion pieces would pop up in the show and what ludicrous relationship antics the girls would get up to next. I was prepped on the sofa, armed with snacks and ready to dive into the lives of these now more mature characters. Then…just like that…they killed Big. And in season 2, they put Aidan Shaw in his place. And it’s really, really not working for me.

To be able to talk about Aidan requires me to sort through my feelings about Big, because the men have always been two sides of the Carrie relationship coin. Carrie and Big’s relationship had major issues. Big was never exactly Carrie’s knight in shining armor, and thinking back, there were many times when his behavior was selfish and narcissistic. Leaving Carrie at the altar and embarrassing her in front of hundreds of guests certainly wasn’t his finest hour, and we were all team Charlotte when she fiercely defended her friend in those iconic New York street scenes.

Up until now, though, the show’s writers have always wanted us to believe in Carrie and Big at all costs. No matter what happened or how bad things got, the storylines would see them reunited. They pushed hard for us to view these two as endgame, so we rode loyally through the battlefield that was their relationship.

Now we’re two seasons into And Just Like That..., and enter: the curveball that is Aidan. I have to question the decision to bring Aidan back at this stage in the game. Where was the chance to see Carrie have a string of wild and wacky relationships and fall back in love with herself and NYC life after Big’s death? I needed more of that and more time with Carrie learning about who she is now. So much of Sex and the City’s original charm was its element of fun. With Carrie being single and navigating life again, there was a golden opportunity to bring back the “boyfriend of the week” vibe but from a fresh and mature perspective. Especially considering that in pop culture, women over 50 very rarely get the chance to date around onscreen.

Don’t get me wrong—I love John Corbett as much as the next gal, but there seems to have been a harsh line in the sand drawn from the perspective of the show: If we bring Aidan back, we have to shove it down viewers’ throats that Big is/was insignificant. In season 2, episode 8 Carrie even muses, “I’ve been asking myself, was Big a big mistake?” The audacity! Even Miranda doesn’t know how to reply. To ask viewers to spend so much time invested in a fictional relationship to then backtrack completely not only stings but is a bit nonsensical.

To be clear, it’s not only the the retconning of Big in favor of Aidan that infuriates me. But let’s not forget that Carrie and Aidan were also never the perfect couple. She didn’t even like him enough to wear her engagement ring on her actual finger! She had an affair for a good chunk of the time they were together. And he spent much of this season refusing to come into her apartment. Just because Carrie had two loves doesn’t mean we have to swap out one for the other. The answer to Big’s death is not automatically Aidan!

As season 2’s finale aired, things got even weirder as Aidan told Carrie to wait FIVE YEARS for their relationship to resume so he can focus on being a father. That’s one hell of a time-out, and with season 3 having just been announced, I’m not sure how the writers will play this one. Will there be a flash-forward to the future? Or will we finally get to see Carrie navigate her life without Aidan in it? Who’s to say!

Watching the show still somehow feels like receiving a warm hug from an old friend. It truly has become my favorite comfort watch, even if it does leave me baffled. But what will season 3 bring to the table? You can bet I’ll still be tuning in to find out. Let’s just hope that there’s a lot less Aidan Shaw, at least for a while.

"Something shifted" during Samantha's And Just Like That... cameo - The A.V. Club

Kim Cattrall

Kim Cattrall doesn’t “want to be in a situation for even an hour where [she’s] not enjoying myself.” Whether her recent, much-anticipated cameo in the season two finale of And Just Like That... was actually fun for the actor (Cattrall has publicly distanced herself from Sex And The City as well as co-star Sarah Jessica Parker) or whether the sub-two-minute appearance merely clocked in below her upper limit of boring things is unclear. Regardless, people have had a lot to say about it.

One such person was showrunner Michael Patrick King, who also weighed in on the moment in an interview with Variety. “As you know, it’s literally a cameo. I mean, it’s just a little moment,” he said of the scene, which sees Samantha calling long-distance BFF Carrie from London to bid adieu to Carrie’s old apartment. “What I always thought was that these characters are texting, and occasionally talking, so I knew it was going to be conversational,” he continued.

“I’m happy that it’s really early in the episode, because I don’t want the drumbeat that this big dramatic thing is going to happen,” he said. (The cameo has been spoiled since May.) “[T]hat was never the intention. The intention was: Look, there she is! They’re talking. It’s two steps past an emotional text. They’re talking.”

As for the bad blood between Cattrall and Parker, it sounds like the two never actually had to interact in real life. “Kim came, she did her scene and she left... Sarah Jessica did her scene earlier, much like all the other phone calls on the show, quite frankly, they don’t happen with the other actors,” said King, who seemingly didn’t want to talk about the falling out all that much either.

“Look, Kate [Arthur, the interviewer], I’m not going to say anything past the fact that it happened. So something shifted everywhere. Obviously, it happened,” he said. “It was the 25th anniversary of Sex and the City. Everybody knew it would be good for the show, and hopefully fun for the fans. And everybody just did it. And there wasn’t a lot of drama around the conversation: People just did it.”

See All the Best Fashion Moments from 'And Just Like That...' Season 2 - PEOPLE

There's plenty to debate when it comes to the plotlines in the second season of And Just Like That... You may be more Team Big than Team Aidan. Perhaps you were the only person rooting for Miranda and Che (we couldn't help but wonder if they should've adopted one of those stray cats together and lived happily ever after?). Or maybe you, like Charlotte, had high hopes for Rock's burgeoning modeling career.

But if there's one thing we can all agree on, it's that the show brought it in the wardrobe department. Right off the bat, the group attended the "Met Ball" and with that we got an array of high-fashion looks, including one very special Vivienne Westwood wedding gown straight out of Carrie's own archives.

Then, there was the appearance of some viral, Hypebeast-approved accessories, like Carrie's JW Anderson pigeon bag (and the stick of gum she pulled out of it). Plus, fans of the original Sex and the City series were treated to throwbacks from the original show, such as Carrie's magazine clutch and Aiden's tighty-whities. In honor of the end of season 2, here's a look back at some of the most memorable fashion moments.

Lisa's Met Gala Valentino Gown

James Devaney/GC Images

Lisa Todd Wexley (Nicole Ari Parker) proved that she's more than ready for Anna Wintour to extend a real-life invitation for her to attend the Met Gala in this custom Valentino number with a huge feather headpiece and an even bigger train.

Carrie's Blizzard-Ready Puffer Gown

Craig Blankenhorn/Max

Carrie didn't let a bomb cyclone slow her down for a second, turning the snow-covered streets into her own personal runway in this Moncler 1 Pierpaolo Piccioli puffer coat gown.

Lisa's Vintage Hat Box

Craig Blankenhorn/Max

Likewise, LTW didn't let a full-on blizzard stop her from making it down the street to the MoMA where her films were being celebrated, even if it meant carrying her wig to the venue in this very chic vintage hat box.

Seema's Leopard-Print Maximalism

Craig Blankenhorn/HBO Max

Seema Patel (Sarita Choudhury) doesn't exactly do demure, so this over-the-top leopard-print matching set makes perfect sense for a casual day at the hair salon.

Aidan's Belstaff Jacket

Max

For Aidan Shaw's (John Corbett) grand return to the show, he demonstrated that he's come a long way from his days as a woodworker eternally clad in a Canadian tuxedo by showing up to his date with Carrie in this belted Belstaff jacket and plum trousers ensemble.

Aiden's Tighty-Whities

Max

But, of course, it wouldn't truly be the return of Aidan until we all got a gander at this man in nothing but his go-to undies.

Charlotte's Gallerina Dress

Max

For Charlotte York (Kristin Davis), this dress isn't just the perfect first-day look to resume her role as a gallerina after years spent as a stay-at-home mom, it's a symbol of her need for the appearance of control and perfection. So when she ditches the ill-fitting belt and the five layers of Spanx once she gets to the gallery, that's about as close as Charlotte gets to penning a full-blown feminist manifesto.

Miranda's Valentine's Date-Night Look

Craig Blankenhorn/Max

Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon) jumped back into the lesbian dating scene in style after her breakup from Che Diaz (Sara Ramirez), donning this form-fitting, one-shoulder purple Halston dress for a (not-so) hot date with an audiobook narrator.

Carrie's Magazine Clutch Callback

James Devaney/GC Images

For Charlotte's costume benefit, Carrie paid homage to Helen Gurley Brown, the former editor of Cosmopolitan, as well as honoring one of her signature purses from the original show with this update on the vintage Mister Ernest '70s magazine clutch she carried in season 3.

Miranda's Green Power Suit

Craig Blankenhorn/Max

Miranda may have only just started her internship at the Human Rights Watch, but in this sage-green wool suit from Max Mara, she looks ready to become the chairman of the board.

Carrie's All-Green Look to Meet the Ex

Max

Carrie needed all the luck she could get meeting up with Aidan's ex-wife Kathy (Rosemarie DeWitt), which may explain why she opted for this monochromatic Kelly green look composed of a bubble-hem dress from the Converted Closet, a vintage green bomber jacket, and metallic Gianvito Rossi heels. In other words, the next best thing to keeping a four-leaf clover on your person at all times.

Charlotte's Burberry-on-Burberry Maximalism

Max

Charlotte's wardrobe tends to be full of sedate pastels and preppy shift dresses, but when she decides to dip her toe into power clashing, you better believe it's going to be in head-to-toe Burberry tartan. It's no coincidence that this look also comes from the episode where Charlotte officially learns of her MILF status at her kids' school.

Carrie's Wedding Dress Rewear

James Devaney/GC Images

But the star of this season had to be the return of the Vivienne Westwood wedding gown that Carrie wore when Big stood her up at the altar in the original Sex and the City movie. The bridal gown, which comes from the Vivienne Westwood Gold Label Fall 2007 collection, features exaggerated corset darts and asymmetrical tiered skirts in ivory duchess satin. In the AJLT season 2 premiere episode, Carrie updates her old bridal look by adding a pair of teal opera gloves and a matching off-the-shoulder cape, transforming it into a baroque ball gown.
