Lecce goalkeeper Wladimiro Falcone was dispirited after his side conceded twice in extra time to fall 2-1 to Roma on Sunday evening.
Falcone’s first half penalty save wasn’t enough to prevent the Salentini from fumbling a late 1-0 lead before Sardar Azmoun and Romelu Lukaku scored in the final minutes to earn the hosts a stunning turnaround win.
“Mourinho said he’d give me the Yashin Trophy? It’s minor consolation but coming from Mourinho it’s an honour and worth double,” Falcone told DAZN.
“We’re sorry for our fans, especially those who traveled. Losing the way we did hurts, it always hurts. We’ll have to maintain what we did well tonight but immediately turn our focus to the next match.”
He continued, “On the penalty save, there’s no secret. Us goalkeepers always study penalty takers. I felt certain on which way Lukaku would go and it worked out well. Obviously I’m glad to have saved his first penalty (in Serie A) but again, it’s minor consolation.”
“As for the two late goals, you’ve got to make the ball disappear in the dying minutes. Instead we gave Roma the opportunity to put in crosses and hurt us. (Nicola) Zalewski put in a great cross while the header of (Sardar) Azmoun was unstoppable.”
“Meanwhile, the final goal showed our inexperience. For me, the game should’ve ended in a 1-1 draw.”
