How Often Does Santa Monica Break Like This? - Stab Magazine

“A few days before this swell, I was in bed and Yadin [Nicol] called me,” says Luke Davis. “He told me to check the Santa Monica cam and I was like, ‘why…’  Then I looked at it and saw a bunch of barrels. I had a full freak out and went down, it was howling offshore with peaky barrels everywhere and nobody around. And then a few days later, when this video was filmed, we surfed it again.”

Though Dogtown has it’s definitive place in surf culture, the stretch of beach between Venice and Topanga is not known to ever be a venue for getting spat out of tubes.

“I’ve lived up here for seven years and I’ve never surfed it like that, it doesn’t get like that,” says Luke. “I literally never check it. Even this time, it was a really small window, maybe 30 minutes. That’s why there wass no one out, because that doesn’t just happen. Plus, I think the rain situation kind of deters people. It was in front of some runoff river blowout and the water was super bad.”
