IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) - The Iowa City Police Department said reports of abduction attempts are rare. This comes just two days after a child in Iowa City reported to police that someone tried to abduct them.
Police are asking for the public’s help in finding evidence in a report of an attempted abduction.
TV9 spoke with multiple people Monday who live near or walk in the Oakland Cemetery daily.
Many were concerned about the report that a twelve-year-old made about someone trying to abduct them Saturday night. Another walker said they feel relatively safe in the nearby neighborhoods.
The Iowa City Chief of Police says investigating reports like these are complicated, and that stranger abductions are rare.
”It’s very rare, it’s very rare, and when we hear something like this, it certainly gets everyone’s attention,” Iowa City Police Chief Dustin Lison said.
On Saturday just before 10:30 at night, Iowa City Police responded to a home near the Oakland Cemetery. A child reported that someone had attempted to abduct him or her.
”The victim, a 12-year-old child reported that they had been approached on foot by a suspect in a black leather coat, black gloves, and a hooded sweatshirt,” said Lee Hermiston, Iowa City Police Public Information Officer.
That’s all of the information the police could provide at this time. The department is asking people that live nearby the check surveillance cameras and send in any footage that could help.
Iowa City Police said cases like this can be difficult. They start with listening to the people making the report, then they turn to evidence.
”We always have to err on the side of caution,” Liston said. “We can’t just decide “oh we’re not sure this happened.” If someone’s telling us it happened, we have to go with what they’re telling us, and we’ll continue with the investigation and if things change, we can adjust and adapt.
Police say Iowa City is a safe area.
”Iowa City is a very safe community, this is something that does not happen on a regular basis,” Liston said. “Most people know their neighbors and most neighbors are looking out for one another and Iowa City is a close-knit community and I think we’re pretty good at that.”
Parents can remain vigilant by knowing where their kids are.
”If you have a child that’s out late, just make sure you know where they are and know what’s going on,” Lison said.
Children should be aware when approached by someone they don’t know.
”Most people know the people in their neighborhood and if you’re approached by someone you’re not comfortable with, do the best thing you can and ask for help, cry for help, and try to get away,” Lison said,
The chief of police shared with TV9 that there are no statistics that show attempted abductions are a common occurrence or increasing.
