In a time like this, it may be best to keep your thoughts to yourself - Arkansas Times

Donald Trump was lightly wounded yesterday in an assassination attempt at a rally in Pennsylvania. One member of the crowd was killed by the gunman and two others were critically injured before the shooter was himself shot and killed by Secret Service agents.

Speculation is rampant on social media. But as of Sunday morning, almost nothing is known about the shooter — 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania — or his motives.

Trump supporters are prematurely blaming Democrats and anti-Trump rhetoric for the shooting. Some Trump opponents, meanwhile, are suggesting the whole thing was staged. I think that’s a wildly irresponsible bit of wishcasting at a terribly fraught moment for the country. Please don’t do that. Step back and take a breath. Wait for more information. And if you’re inclined to hate Donald Trump, maybe dial back the posting for a second.

Back in 2008, like so many other millennials, I was swept up in enthusiasm for Barack Obama. At one point late in the campaign, I remember having a sudden visceral fear that he would be assassinated — that there’s no way “they” would let him occupy the White House, with all the promise and hope he represented. It’s not easy for me to understand how people feel the same about Donald Trump, but I know that many millions of people do. I can imagine their shock and fear and outrage upon hearing their candidate had almost been murdered.

You don’t have to respond to an event like this with insincere well-wishes for Donald Trump; leave that to the professional politicians. You do, in my opinion, need to try to put yourself in the position of an everyday person on the other side of the divide. Don’t spread rumors and inflammatory rhetoric. I know it’s the lamest, preachiest thing in the world to urge empathy for your political opponents, but it’s also the foundation of liberal democracy. If you’re worried about existential threats to democracy, maybe think about whether we’re part of the problem.
