“We see events like this everyday.” Overdose cases staying prevalent in the Ozarks - KY3

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) - Overdoses are common across the nation and are still prevalent right here in the Ozarks.

“In 2023, the Springfield Fire Department responded to 281 calls for overdose,” said Christopher Rousch with the Springfield Fire Department. “That’s in addition to other agencies in our area that are responding to those like Mercy and Cox EMS, those that are driven to the hospital, and those that unfortunately, no one calls 911 for.”

Dr. Tom Lewis with Mercy Emergency Services agreed with Rousch, calling the overdose problem in Springfield an ‘ongoing public health emergency.’

“We see events like this every day, in the emergency department, our medical crews see it on the street every day and are intervening with overdoses,” Dr. Lewis said.

Mark McKnelly works at Victory Mission, and he said he’s witnessed overdoses firsthand.

“The initial emotional experience is one of shock. It’s hard to believe that this person who had become such a part of your life and somebody that you saw every day in our program and at work...is gone,” McKnelly said.

If you see someone overdosing in a car or in a parking lot, call 911 immediately. The 911 operator can walk you through what to do, but it’s, of course, a case-by-case scenario.

“If they’re breathing and if they have a pulse, then you can administer Narcan. We generally start with one dose up the nose, then continue to support the patient,” Rousch said. “They should come around. By then, emergency personnel should be there, and they’ll take it from there.”

Springfield Fire does provide leave-behind kits at overdose patients’ homes. In previous coverage, we also reported various places where you can get free Narcan in Springfield.
