Kim Cattrall's 'stipulations' for 'And Just Like That' cameo revealed - Page Six

And just like that … in the most stunning news of the week, Kim Cattrall is back in the “Sex and the City” universe as maneater Samantha Jones.

The Post first revealed that the actress has secretly filmed a cameo appearance for the Max spin-off “And Just Like That,” after a well-publicized fallout with star Sarah Jessica Parker that saw her absent from the first season.

But Page Six can reveal that Cattrall’s surprise second-season — said to be a “cliffhanger” — appearance did not come without its demands.

According to sources, the actress refused to film with her former co-stars Parker, Cynthia Nixon, and Kristin Davis.

She also would not set foot on the Queens set if showrunner — and SJP ally — Michael Patrick King was there, highly-placed sources told Page Six.

One show source said: “Kim had two stipulations -—one, that she would not act with any of the other girls, and two, she did not want to see Michael Patrick King.”

Cattrall, who acted in such films as “Mannequin,” won a whole new level of fame playing Samantha, the indomitable publicist, cougar, and BFF of Carrie Bradshaw, even earning a Golden Globe.

The actress was a fan favorite but refused to return for a third “SATC” movie amid reports of friction between her and SJP — including the revelation that Cattrall felt she and her co-stars were not financially compensated well enough, with SJP paid more than them.

Producers dismissed Samantha’s absence in the first few episodes of “AJLT” by making it clear that the character now lives in London and that she and Carrie had a fallout after the writer dumped her as a publicist.

But it seems like Cattrall got the last laugh in her buzzy return, as the show source said: “She will have gotten a s–tload of money. It just shows the power of Kim.

“They still need her on the show. But even though this may get fans thinking she’ll be back for the next season, she’ll never do that. She was treated poorly,” the show source said. “I’m glad she gets to be the hero … I’m sure it took a lot of massaging to make the cameo happen.”

In the scene, Samantha is reportedly seen in a car having a phone conversation with Carrie.

A spokesperson for HBO and Max told Page Six: “The offer presented to Kim was always to be a phone call, shot alone as most calls would be. This was an easy and convenient way for Samantha to return. We are delighted it worked out.”

Candace Bushnell, the celebrated writer, and creator of the “SATC” franchise, told Page Six: “I love Kim, everyone loves Kim.

“I’m sure she got paid handsomely … Kim is a grown woman and she does things on her own terms.”

“It’s what the fans want,” the 64-year-old added.

Bushnell who still gets a creator credit for “AJLT,” added: “Listen, I hope this series runs for a long time!”

She has long been a staunch defender of Cattrall and previously told Page Six: “It seems she wants to do other things, and she doesn’t feel like doing the show. Maybe she doesn’t want to be that character anymore. Maybe she doesn’t want to put the Spanx on!”

Cattrall was dressed for her return by the venerable stylist Patricia Field, who was responsible for all the outfits on “SATC.”

Field, 82, has since moved on to styling the looks for Netflix’s “Emily in Paris,” created by “SATC” producer Darren Star.

When contacted by Page Six about the latest collaboration with Cattrall, Field — who does not normally work on “And Just Like That” — said: “I love Kim, I loved dressing her, it was so cool. It was a wonderful opportunity.

“She asked for something specific and I provided it. She was doing this one cameo and I did it for her.”

She declined to talk about any of the show drama, adding, “I don’t want to get into the middle of anything.”

Field told the Sunday Times in 2021 that Cattrall’s absence created a “vacuum” on “AJLT,” saying, “I hear it everywhere. Everyone is mad she won’t be in it.”

The stylist passed her baton to Molly Rogers, who formerly worked with Field on “SATC” and now dresses the women of “AJLT.”

“I like some of it, I don’t like all of it, but I know what Molly’s dealing with,” Field told the Times of the new show’s looks.

“Well, I know those gals! Sarah Jessica [Parker] thinks she knows everything — and she does. Cynthia Nixon thinks she knows everything — and she doesn’t!” Field said.

“AJLT” — which streams on the newly renamed Max, formerly HBO Max — is produced by Warner Bros. A studio source told Page Six that Cattrall’s cameo was a “surprise” to many on set, and another person in attendance that day revealed that Cattrall was not on the call sheet at Silvercup Studios in Queens.

While the show returns on June 22, Cattrall’s cameo won’t be seen until August.

A planned red-carpet premiere has been scrapped due to the writer’s strike, Page Six is told.

Cattrall — who has been happily dating Russell Thomas for the past seven years — had fun with the big news of her return, posting a link to an article on social media with the message “Happy Pride.”

It was greeted with a flurry of love from Kris Jenner, Bushnell, and high-profile fans, with one commenting: “And just like that …. Now I’ll watch it.”

It’s still not quite clear how Cattrall’s return came to be, as Page Six was told even senior producers did not know and Max execs were desperate to keep the news quiet.

Cattrall, who stars in the new film comedy “About My Father” with Robert De Niro, has been outspoken about her thoughts on “SATC” and her former co-stars.

She told Variety last year about turning down a third movie based on the series, saying, “It’s a great wisdom to know when enough is enough. I also didn’t want to compromise what the show was to me. The way forward seemed clear.”

She also made it clear she wanted nothing to do with a plot-line in the planned third movie in which Miranda Hobbes’ (Nixon’s) teenage son, Brady, would be sending Samantha unsolicited d–k pics.

And then, famously, there was her difficult relationship with SJP.

Kim Cattrall, Patricia Field, Candace Bushnell
Writer and “SATC” creator Candace Bushnell — seen here, left, with Patricia Field and Kim Cattrall — said she’s sure Cattrall got paid “handsomely” for her cameo.

While talking to Piers Morgan in 2017, Cattrall insisted that she and the cast were never more than work associates, explaining, “We’ve never been friends. We‘ve been colleagues and in some ways, it’s a very healthy place to be because then you have a clear line between your professional life and relationship and your personal.”

In response, SJP told Andy Cohen in 2018 that she was “just heartbroken.”

Soon after, Cattrall was left grief stricken when her brother Chris died by suicide in February 2018. Parker, along with many other famous friends and colleagues, sent Cattrall “love and condolences” over Instagram.

However, Cattrall replied: “I don’t need your love or support at this tragic time @sarahjessicaparker.”

She added in the Instagram caption, “My Mom asked me today ‘When will that @sarahjessicaparker, that hypocrite, leave you alone?’ Your continuous reaching out is a painful reminder of how cruel you really were then and now.

“Let me make this VERY clear. (If I haven’t already) You are not my family. You are not my friend. So I’m writing to tell you one last time to stop exploiting our tragedy in order to restore your ‘nice girl’ persona.”

SJP later denied any “catfight,” although, after the release of “AJLT,” she admitted she would not be OK with Cattrall’s return.

“I don’t think I would, because I think there’s just too much public history of feelings on her part that she’s shared,” Parker said. “I haven’t participated in or read articles, although people are inclined to let me know.”

“AJLT” debuted to a stream of mixed reviews, as one high-profile industry insider told Page Six: “The scripts were uneven.”

Bushnell, who had nothing to do with the second show, spoke out about it in February 2022, telling The New Yorker she was “really startled by a lot of the decisions made in the reboot.”

She added: “I mean, Carrie Bradshaw ended up being a quirky woman who married a really rich guy. And that’s not my story or any of my friends’ stories. But TV has its own logic.”

Everything Kim Cattrall Has Said About 'And Just Like That...' - PEOPLE

Kim Cattrall is finally making her comeback as beloved “trysexual” Samantha Jones in the second season of the Sex and the City reboot, And Just Like That…!

Though the Golden Globe-winning actress has publicly distanced herself from the franchise in the past, she announced on the first day of Pride Month in June 2023 that she would be returning to the show as Samantha for a cameo in the final episode.

While her other former costars have yet to comment on Cattrall’s return, the news was met with wide excitement from fans. Cattrall had previously stated that she would not come back as Samantha as she closed the chapter after the first two Sex and the City movies.

In 2017, rumors swirled that the TV star was the reason a third SATC film was never made, but Cattrall was quick to squash them, telling Piers Morgan for ITV’s series Life Stories that she had said no multiple times.

“It’s quite extraordinary to get any kind of negative press about something that I’ve been saying for almost a year of ‘no’ that I’m demanding or a diva,” Cattrall said, according to the Daily Mail. “The answer was always no and a respectful, firm, no.”

Cattrall did not appear in the first season of And Just Like That…, which aired in December 2021, though her character was present through on-screen text messages with Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker). The second season will premiere on June 22 on Max.

Here’s everything Kim Cattrall has said about returning to And Just Like That… and her iconic character Samantha Jones.

Max confirmed the news that Cattrall would step back into Samantha’s shoes and one day later, Cattrall announced the happy return herself on June 1, 2023 — the first day of Pride Month.

The actress posted a photo of herself as Samantha and captioned the post, “Happy Pride 🏳️‍ðŸŒˆĂ°Ÿ³️‍⚧️🌈…..,” which may have been a reference to her character once saying “I'm a ‘trysexual.’ I'll try anything once” during the third season of SATC.

In her return, which will take place in the season 2 finale, Cattrall’s character will reportedly speak over the phone to Carrie. Variety reported that Cattrall filmed her scene in March 2023 in New York City “without seeing or speaking with the stars of the series” including Parker, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis. She also reportedly did not interact with series creator Michael Patrick King.

King did confirm to Variety in June 2022 that Samantha would be a part of the second season's storyline.

"It's all so new right now," he said at the time. "One of my big rules is, don't tell things until they're real."

He added, "My goal is to bring all the characters into the mix together, so that they're not so much on separate runways."

However, fans weren’t the only ones excited about Cattrall’s return. Ivan Hernandez, who plays newcomer Franklyn in the series, told PEOPLE he was looking forward to seeing Cattrall on the screen again.

“I'm excited as well,” he said on the red carpet premiere for Netflix’s Never Have I Ever in June 2023. “I just found out yesterday, and I think it's a great idea. I think it's something that the fans all wanted and missed. She's such great character, so I can't wait to see it myself.”

While Cattrall may not have reunited with her former costars, she did work with her longtime friend and original SATC costume designer Patricia Field again.

Field worked on the original series as well as the two movies, but did not make a return for the new show due to a time conflict as she was working on Netflix's Emily in Paris in Paris. The designer and Cattrall remained friends after their work on SATC and reunited on the set in March 2023.

Cattrall previously said she would not want to reprise Samantha on the show

In May 2022 interview Variety, Cattrall made her feelings clear about not wanting to be part of the new show. She told the outlet that she didn’t like how her character was represented in the script for the never-produced third movie, saying it was “heartbreaking” and that it turned her off from reprising Samantha.

She also claimed that the new show was “basically the third movie,” since it included some of the same storylines like Big, Carrie’s longtime partner, dying.

In response to what she thought about people missing Samantha, Cattrall said she never “deserted” the character, adding, “Can you imagine going back to a job you did 25 years ago? And the job didn’t get easier; it got more complicated in the sense of how are you going to progress with these characters?”

She continued, “Everything has to grow, or it dies. I felt that when the series ended, I thought that’s smart. We’re not repeating ourselves. And then the movie to end all the loose ends. And then there’s another movie. And then there’s another movie?”

Cattrall went on to say that after the second movie, "Everything in me went, 'I’m done.' '

Cattrall said she learned about And Just Like That... on social media

During the same Variety interview, Cattrall also revealed that she wasn’t asked to join the reboot in the first place.

“I was never asked to be part of the reboot,” she claimed. “I made my feelings clear after the possible third movie, so I found out about it like everyone else did — on social media.”

Parker confirmed Cattrall wasn’t asked back on The Hollywood Reporter's Awards Chatter podcast in 2022.

"She made it clear that that wasn't something she wanted to pursue, and it no longer felt comfortable for us, and so it didn't occur to us," the Hocus Pocus actress said. "That's not 'slamming' her, it's just learning. You've got to listen to somebody, and if they're publicly talking about something and it doesn't suggest it's some place they want to be, or a person they want to play, or an environment in which they want to be, you get to an age where you're like, 'Well, we hear that.' "

Cattrall admitted she never saw an episode of the show, though she did “hear about it,” she told Variety. When asked what she thought of some of the choices for her character and her text message appearance in season 1, Cattrall said the “greatest compliment” she could have was “to be missed.”

She added that what she heard about Samantha’s storyline — and her falling out with Carrie — felt “different than the Samantha I played.”

Cattrall said it now felt “strange” that the show was moving on without her. “A world that I know so much about that now I don’t,” she said.

In 2017, Parker announced plans for a third SATC movie were officially scrapped and many pointed fingers at Cattrall, who publicly said she did not want to join the film

Responding to an Instagram user who commented asking Cattrall to participate in a third film, she said that her “heart isn’t in it anymore.”

“I’ve moved on,” Cattrall continued. “61 isn’t 53 or 41. I have learned so much from our Sam. She was my hero but I want to rest & not work as much as I have been doing for years. I want a less hectic life. My decision reflects where I am in my life & I can’t change that without being unhappy. I hope you’ll understand. Kim.”

Cattrall has looked back fondly on her days filming Sex and the City

James Devaney/WireImage

Cattrall reminisced on her days filming Sex and the Cityin a September 2020 interview with PEOPLE.

She described how the show had an “innocence” to it despite its subject matter. “It was a special time,” she said. “There was an innocence to it — though it didn't feel innocent while it was happening. To have that kind of timing for women honestly discussing subject matter near and dear to my heart, we needed that.”

Cattrall added how the show was revolutionary in the way it talked about sex, especially her character, who was very sex-positive and bold.

"Growing up, I was left with clinical knowledge about sex," Cattrall said. "But then I found myself in a position where I had a platform, playing a character who personified sexual appetite. I thought this is a really interesting time to talk about this."

She continued, "That's the great thing about being involved in a hit like Sex and the City. It's of its time, and it was part of the zeitgeist. I do feel proud."

While Sex and the City may have ended in 2004, Cattrall has continued to appear in movies and television. She made her network TV debut in 2020 with the release of Fox’s Filthy Rich.

In January 2020, she spoke with reporters at the Television Critics Association winter press tour about how much had changed in the television industry since she portrayed Samantha on TV.

“I’ve never been on network television,” she said. “Coming back to television has changed so much just since I did Sex and the City. I mean we don’t cut anymore, we just keep going. Everything is digital, instead of one or two cameras, we have five cameras. You can’t kind of warm up to a close-up. You have to be right on your game all the time.”

And Just Like That… Kim Cattrall Will Play Samantha Again - Vanity Fair

Max confirms that Cattrall—who infamously didn’t return to the Sex and the City franchise—will appear on And Just Like That… for a single scene.

Did you feel that chill? Hell must have frozen over, because Kim Cattrall is reportedly stepping back into the Louboutins of PR maven Samantha Jones. As first reported by Variety, Cattrall—who played the feisty and fabulous Samantha Jones on Sex and the City for six seasons and two movies—will return for the season two finale of And Just Like That…, the Sex and the City revival series starring her former costars Kristin Davis, Cynthia Nixon, and Sarah Jessica Parker. Max subsequently confirmed the news.

Per Variety, Cattrall will appear in a single scene. The trade writes that Cattrall shot her dialogue in New York City on March 22, without having to see or speak to her former costars (or showrunner Michael Patrick King). Her reprisal is reportedly set for the season two finale.

Those familiar with behind-the-scenes drama of Sex and the City universe are well aware that Cattrall reportedly did not get along with her costars, particularly Parker. Cattrall refused to participate in a third Sex and the City film, reportedly killing the project. “I would have preferred for all of us to have some kind of event to warrant a third film. That didn’t happen,” Cattrall told Variety in 2022 of the proposed third film.

More recently, Cattrall says she wasn’t even asked to participate in And Just Like That…, the series which follows the iconic foursome (minus one) more than 15 years after the end of Sex and the City. “It’s a great wisdom to know when enough is enough,” said Cattrall in the same Variety interview. “I also didn’t want to compromise what the show was to me. The way forward seemed clear.”

Given this fraught history, it’s shocking to hear that Cattrall—who has made it very clear that she does not like to be in a situation for even an hour where she’s not enjoying herself—would deign to make an appearance on And Just Like That. According to Variety, it took Casey Bloys, the chairman and CEO of HBO and Max content, personally approaching Cattrall and asking her to reprise her role to get her to say yes. Along with Cattrall, iconic Sex and the City costume designer Patricia Field, who has not been involved with And Just Like That…, returned to dress Samantha for her scene.

Was it money that ultimately convinced Cattrall to make a cameo on And Just Like That…? Was it love (for the enduring and iconic woman that is Samantha Jones)? We may never know. (When asked for comment, Max only pointed VF to the New York Post story in which it confirmed that Cattrall will appear on the show.) In any case, it seems that Samantha Jones really will be making her grand return to the Sex and the City universe. And honey, that’s something to celebrate.

Kim Cattrall to appear in And Just Like That series finale - BBC

Kim Cattrall, who was noticeably absent from the first season of Sex and the City spin-off And Just Like That, will appear in the second series.

Variety reports she will reprise her role as Samantha Jones in one scene of the HBO show's season finale.

Cattrall, who has a strong gay following, shared the article online with the caption "Happy Pride".

The article reports that she shot her dialogue without other stars of the series, including Sarah Jessica Parker.

Cattrall's character is explained as being absent in a storyline that sees her move to London.

The original Sex and the City ran for six series from 1998 to 2004 and generated two spin-off movies.

It created storylines about work and relationships for four New York women in the 1990s and early 2000s.

Parker and Cattrall starred alongside Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis as Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte.

Parker, Nixon and Davis appeared in the 10-part And Just Like That series in 2021.

It was never explained why Cattrall did not take part in the latest revival but she reportedly has a strained relationship with the show and her cast-mates.

In 2017, Cattrall told Piers Morgan she had "never been friends" with her co-stars.

Describing a "toxic relationship", she ruled out appearing in a third Sex and the City movie, and denied that her decision was down to pay negotiations or "diva" demands.

Cattrall commented that former co-star Parker "could have been nicer" about the situation.

Showrunner Michael Patrick King later said he could not imagine Cattrall returning to the show again.

But a reported conversation with CEO of HBO Casey Bloys was enough to change star's mind.

The second series of And Just Like That will air in June, with Cattrall's scene expected to be shown in August.
