It was a warm day in Eau Claire, though high temperatures weren't quite as warm as this past weekend. It was the lows that were warmer as it was just the second time in 2019 Eau Claire's low failed to fall below freezing.
Highs for the most part were below 40 unlike yesterday, but the sun sure felt nice again as March came in like a lamb. These temperatures are above average, and our averages really start climbing this month.
Our average high jumps from 34 on March 1 all the way up to 49 on March 31, gaining a degree about every other day. The lows warm up similarly. Of course, March is known for the ability to have all types of weather, with snow still being quite common.
In fact, March averages a couple tenths of an inch more snow than February in Eau Claire- with an average of 9.2” that comes with an average of two systems of over two inches each in an average March. We average a snow storm of 6 inches or more after March 1 (so any time in either March or April) once every 4 years.
Back to the weather this evening. There was a breeze much of the day, and that continues this evening as temperatures really aren't falling very fast once again.
What we will notice is an increase in cloud cover this evening thicken up overnight. There are a few weak impulses in the jet that will give us small chances for precipitation over the next few days.
The first arrives tonight and brings a chance for a burst of snow lasting only an hour or so. This will bring anywhere between nothing and a quarter inch of snow by morning.
While roads may be slick early, rising temperatures should ensure a fast melt with highs once again approaching 40 degrees. Some more flurries or light mix/drizzle will be possible tomorrow afternoon with another weak system bringing chances on Thursday.
We'll continue to warm all week with highs in the low to mid 40s. By next weekend, highs will approach 50 for the first time in 2020.
