Trey Anastasio has released another song from quarantine, this time “I Never Needed You Like This Before”, marking his fourth this week.
Yet another collaboration with Tom Marshall and Scott Herman, “I Never Needed You Like This Before”, stands out as one of the musically heaviest, lyrically darker songs Trey has released this week. Things started off light and acoustic with his first two songs, “Lost In The Pack” and “When The Words Go Away“, that were musically easygoing even while still being lyrically dour. Then on Saturday, Trey brought out his trusty Languedoc for the electric “Timeless”, which still featured a pleasant, bouncy feeling. Today’s release of “I Never Needed You Like This Before”, however, brought together the lyrical sadness expressed in this isolation songs with the musical manifestation of these feelings.
“I Never Needed You Like This Before” is the most produced song so far, as it features a backing drum track as well as looped vocals from Trey himself. As he delivers poignant lines like “There’s something in your silent eyes that won’t/although I wonder why”, his voice can be heard in the background singing the song’s titular refrain. The song’s structure features some standard power chord slides paired with a texture and lyrical quality reminiscent of Ghosts of the Forest, and could likely transition well to the stage, where Trey wouldn’t have to harmonize with himself.
