Mets' Steven Matz built foundation for tragedies like this - New York Post

Steven Matz started his Tru32 initiative in 2015 to help first responders in New York City.

Five years later, the Mets left-hander’s foundation is coming through again for those on the front lines of an unthinkable battle — the COVID-19 pandemic — with the Long Island native Matz and his wife Taylor donating $32,000 through the Tru32 program.

“This is really the reason why we have this foundation, is just in times when there’s tragedy, to be there to use the platform and the resources that we have been given to just help others,” Matz said Monday on a new episode of The Post’s “Amazin’ But True” Mets podcast. “Unfortunately tragedy does strike and crazy times like this do happen. Just to really have the resources and platform to do it and also just to inspire others to join up and help out wherever the needs are. That’s why we do it.”

Matz announced Friday that the first donation had already gone out to Elmhurst Hospital in Queens. The hospital close to Citi Field has been hit hard by the coronavirus outbreak, and Matz encouraged others to help support them at supportelmhurst.org/donate.

The rest of Matz’s donation will go to New York police and firefighter foundations in their own fight against COVID-19.

Matz has been spending his quarantine at his home in Nashville, throwing with Mets teammate Brad Brach and working out at a gym in his friend’s garage.

While he said “it’s definitely a strange time” waiting to see when or if baseball will be played again this year, Matz is holding off on having strong feelings about whether MLB should have a shortened season, with games potentially played at spring training facilities with no fans.

“I don’t even really have an opinion on any of it. It’s really tough,” Matz said. “I think everybody’s in agreement [over] let’s just play as many games as possible. It’s just hard to even have an opinion because you just don’t know. It’s all an unknown. “First and foremost, our mindset’s like, ‘I just want to play again. What are we [going to do]?’ Then you realize, man, people are really being negatively affected by this and their health and their loved ones. So it’s like, all right, let’s take a step back for a second and let’s let this thing pass and then readdress that really once.”
