Letters: Our back to school could look like this - The Durango Herald

Students need to get back to school, in person. There are too many risks and problems with distance learning. Could a half-day schedule possibly work?

Here’s what I think it could look like:

There could be an a.m. session and a p.m. session. The morning session would take place 7:30 to 11 (early, I know).

The students and teachers would have a 15-minute snack/bathroom break during this time. Students wouldn’t eat lunch at school. Students who normally eat school lunch would have a sack lunch available to them.

The morning session would end at 11. An hour break would allow for teachers to eat lunch and thoroughly clean desks and chairs to get ready for the p.m. group, which would arrive at noon, after eating lunch before getting to school.

The afternoon session would last until 3:30, with a 15-minute break. Specials teachers and paras would be assisting classroom teachers in any way necessary, as their classes would look very different.

Children would attend four days a week and there would be up to 12 children each session. Teachers would have 24 students, total. They would have one full day a week for planning ( Monday or Friday) and an hour staff meeting, when necessary.

In order to put distance between students, specials rooms and cafeterias could be used as classrooms, if needed. Temporary barriers could be installed. Direct instruction would take place during precious classroom time and practice could take place as distance learning.
