BULLDOG STUDENT-ATHLETES BEGIN RETURN TO CAMPUS JULY 6TH - UMD Bulldogs

The University of Minnesota Duluth athletic department announced today its initial plans for a phased approach to bring student-athletes back to campus. Starting Monday, July 6th, approximately 100 Bulldog student-athletes will begin returning for limited voluntary workouts following a robust screening and assessment process. The Bulldog Sports Medicine Staff have developed guidelines and protocols to protect the health and safety of the Bulldog student-athletes, coaches, staff, campus and community. These guidelines were developed with information from and consultation with the University of Minnesota System, Essentia Health, the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) and Centers for Disease Control (CDC).

"Essentia Health is proud to team with Bulldog Athletics in navigating a safe return to sports," said Dr. Ben Nelson of Essentia Health. "The entirety of Essentia Health's resources, including expert consulting, the coordination of appropriate COVID-19 testing, and care for illnesses of any severity are available for our student-athletes. As always, we look forward to serving UMD Athletics with the best of medical care."

Prior to returning to campus, all student-athletes must undertake a 14 day modified quarantine to limit their respective exposure. Subsequently, each morning, UMD student-athletes who have returned to campus must complete a daily symptom questionnaire via an online app. The screening process will determine access to activities and testing based on results of the daily symptom check and exposure questionnaire. Upon arrival to campus, student-athletes will undergo additional screening and have their temperature taken at a designated checkpoint based on their scheduled workout time. Individuals will be required to wear face coverings/masks, practice physical distancing, sanitize their hands regularly, and only be on campus during their designated workout time. There will be no access to the locker rooms, showers or players' lounges. The plan will be regularly evaluated and updated as best practices and conditions dictate.

"University of Minnesota Duluth Athletics is committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for our student-athletes. I'm proud of the collaborative efforts between the UMD Sports Medicine Staff, Essentia Health and University of Minnesota system experts," said UMD Assistant Athletic Director of Sports Medicine/Performance Dr. Michael Wendinger. "Relying on guidance from both the CDC as well as the MDH we were able to develop a robust prevention strategy as well as plans for responding to illness. The goal is to mitigate risks and perform these activities as safely as possible for all while providing a meaningful athletic experience. We are all excited to begin welcoming some of our athletes back on campus to prepare for the upcoming seasons."

"Procedures for returning to AMSOIL Arena have been developed with our student-athlete's health and safety at the forefront," said UMD Director of Hockey Sports Performance Dr. Susan Hoppe.  "We understand the education of our staff and student-athletes needs to be continuous and adaptable as new information arises. We are cautiously optimistic in our prevention strategies and are looking forward to our teams returning to activity on a limited basis."

Bulldog Athletics coaches and staff will continue working remotely as much as possible, follow good hygiene practices, proper sanitation techniques and physical distancing to reduce the potential spread of COVID-19. The wearing of face coverings/masks is required and two-way movement will be significantly limited. Additional information on the University of Minnesota Duluth campus procedures as it relates to Coronavirus (COVID-19) can be found here.

"We appreciate all of the efforts of our medical staff, experts, partners and campus to develop these plans and procedures," said UMD Athletic Director Josh Berlo. "As we have seen across the globe, COVID-19 will present challenges and likely some setbacks. However, we are confident that these issues can be navigated with the efforts and plans developed. Our policies and procedures are rooted in a health and safety first philosophy and we are prepared to adapt accordingly. We look forward to resuming limited athletic activities prudently, albeit in a modified fashion, beginning Monday. As always, Go Bulldogs!"
