WeatherTalk: Long periods of 90 degree weather are rare here - Grand Forks Herald

adanyabegini.blogspot.com

Long stretches of 90 degree weather in Fargo-Moorhead are somewhat unusual. Since 1881, there have been only 20 times when the high temperature has been at or above 90 degrees for six consecutive days or longer. The last time this area experienced a long stretch of 90 degree heat was in July of 2006. We also had a stretch of six straight 90 degree days in August 2001 and August 2003. Our two warmest summers, 1988 and 1936, each recorded two such stretches.

The most brutal heat wave in this area was back in 1936, when 15 straight days of 90 degree temperatures were observed with eight of those days exceeding 100 degrees. The second longest heat wave on record came during the summer of 1976 when it was 90 degrees or above for nine straight days during late August. The most recent protracted heat wave was in June 1995, when for eight straight days the high was in the 90s with one of those days reaching 100.
