Since we don’t have a Cubs game to enjoy this evening, might I recommend some reading up on what’s been happening with the other Cubs group, playing at the alternate site in South Bend?
Tommy Birch spoke with Iowa Cubs manager Marty Pevey, who has been working there, and the insights are fascinating:
The #Cubs alternate training site in South Bend is off limits to fans and media members. So, I got in contact with @IowaCubs Marty Pevey to see what it's like there and how some of the organization's biggest prospects have looked. https://t.co/dH06bItkMF

I find it interesting to have it confirmed that the Cubs are trying to stage a bunch of intrasquad games … but don’t have enough hitters to do it fully. So they have to play without certain positions in the field in order to have a batter at the plate.
Pevey’s comments on some of the prospects at South Bend are what’ll catch your eye most, including takes on Adbert Alzolay, Brailyn Marquez, Miguel Amaya, Christopher Morel, and top prospect Brennen Davis.
Indeed, you’re going to want to sit down before reading what Pevey – who has been the Iowa Cubs manager for seven years following 14 years as a coach elsewhere – had to say about Davis:
“I’ve never — and this is the god’s honest truth — I have never seen power like this kid’s going to have. I’m not talking about pull power. I’m talking about just raw, leverage power — like Dale Murphy driving the ball to right-center early in his career. Holy smokes, he’s got some pop.”
Davis is our top prospect for a reason. More here from Davis, himself, when Bryan spoke with him last month.
