I appreciate Thursday’s Guest Commentary, “Highway expansion, a climate setback.” Destabilization of the climate system is on course to be the most widespread, most long-lasting harm ever caused by human beings against other human beings.
Our record August heat, followed by devastating fire that totalled some 925 homes and disrupted untold lives in Santa Cruz County, is likely just an early chapter in our local book of climate change woes. Here in Santa Cruz County, transportation officials know to modify the optics of climate-ruinous projects like expanding Highway 1 and building another major parking garage downtown. A big auto-centric project core, where the real money will go, is layered over with appealing add-ons, and marketed as a “multi-use library project” or as including bike/pedestrian encouragement purposes near the freeway. Let’s find the courage and the wisdom to do far better, and to tell it like it is.
