Davion Mintz transferred from Creighton to Kentucky in hopes of winning a national championship. Now, with Kentucky’s NCAA Tournament hopes officially dashed, he’ll have to watch his former Blue Jays compete in the Big Dance from the couch, a cruel twist during a cruel year. Mintz finished with 16 points (6-10 FG, 4-7 3PT), eight assists, two rebounds, and only one foul in Kentucky’s 74-73 loss to Mississippi State. Afterwards, he told reporters that whether this is his last game as a Wildcat or not, it’s not how he wanted the season to end.

“It’s one of those things like now how it feels to be this low,” Mintz said. “I’ve never lost this many games in my life in basketball, I mean, just consecutively like this. I know other guys on this roster haven’t either. Now you know. You know how it feels. You don’t want to climb back into that hole. Like now, once you dig in, you know exactly how to escape. You just don’t want that pain to come back. It’s terrible.

Whether it’s my last college game or not, you just don’t want to go out like that. I know a lot of guys are feeling terrible. I mean, even if that’s the next level or not, you know how it feels to lose like this.”

It feels like all of Kentucky’s issues this season were reflected in the loss to the Bulldogs: weak post play, stagnant offense, foul trouble, and a second half surge followed by a late-game collapse. Kentucky only had one field goal in the final 4:28, which Mintz said is an all too familiar tune.

“Yeah, it pisses me off, for sure. I mean, it’s just been like the punch of our season. It’s always the last four minutes. I wish we could have executed it. I mean, I was really looking forward to moving on. Everyone had a winning attitude coming into this tournament. No one had any type of disbelief. Even Terrence [Clarke] coming back to try to fight and play with us. It’s not like guys were not looking forward to making a run. Just last four minutes got us. There’s nothing we can do with that at this point.”

Mintz can still run it back for another season thanks to the NCAA, but when asked, said he’s going to take his time with the decision.

“No idea,” Mintz said when asked his timeframe on deciding if he’ll come back. “Just lost. I’m just processing that now. Make sure my body is healthy, decide whenever that time comes.”
