While seemingly everything has been canceled or done virtually over the last 12 months in Western New York, there are signs that things will be normal in the coming weeks and months with restrictions loosening and more and more people getting the COVID-19 vaccine.
One of the major events in Buffalo every spring and summer is the annual Dyngus Day Parade in Buffalo.
Last year's parade festivities were canceled, but the parade is being planned on for 2021, which will take place at 5 p.m. on April 5th on Buffalo's east side.
But this year's parade will look very different, and people that want to attend must know the changes that will be taking place.
Firstly, the amount of people will be cut in half. According to The Am-Pol Eagle, spectators will be limited to 200 people per block of the parade route, which counts 15 blocks on Broadway from Memorial Drive to Fillmore Avenue.
Secondly, the amount of floats and marchers will also be cut in half. Measuring will take place in the staging area to make sure there aren't too many people and there's enough spacing, according to Eddy Dobosiewicz, president and coordinator of Dyngus Day Buffalo.
Thirdly, there are usually many parties and get-togethers that happen before and after the parade in Buffalo, which for the most part won't happen this year. The Polish Cadets are holding a socially distant and limited-number dinner (150 tickets sold each session) on Grant Street in Buffalo, near Buffalo State College.
However, places such as St. Stan's, Arty's, Happy Swallow and others will not be holding Dyngus Day parties this year.
"The event is a month away. We're limiting the amount of participants, and re-configuring the parade route in a manner that is different than in years' past, where it previously was congested with people close together." said Dobosiewicz.
Dobosiewicz added:
“This event will never be the same, and many vendors are out of business. This will cost us money, and is not a financial windfall for us. But it's Polonia's way of standing up for freedom. The Polish American Congress is 100 percent behind this. We are proclaiming our freedom. Dyngus Day is about celebrating, and re-birth."
