Special bonus season is upon us. That means that the top of the Biglaw heap is busy showering its associates with extra cash to say thank you. But when special bonuses swept the industry in the Fall of 2020, there was a segment of firms that went out of their way to be clear that bonuses (at least in autumn) were not in the offing. Now that there are more bonuses afoot, firms that aren’t ready to dole out bonuses are also being clear with associates.
The following email was sent to U.S. associates at Magic Circle firm Clifford Chance. A recent video message noted that bonuses were coming, but a follow-up message made clear, that because U.S. associates got the fall special bonuses, they will not be getting special bonuses in 2021.
Of course, they could always come back and say (particularly as market pressure increases with even more firms deciding to match this new spring bonus scale), JK! Here are more associate bonuses. But given the tone of this email, well, it doesn’t seem likely. UPDATE: Other tipsters at Clifford Chance have reached out to Above the Law to say they’re still hopeful that the firm may make a move to match the market, particularly since the email predates the special bonus momentum. Either way, we’ll be watching to see what happens.
