Here’s Why NBC Won’t Air The Golden Globes Next Year - Forbes

Topline

NBC has decided not to air the Golden Globes Awards in 2022, the network announced Monday, after months of outrage over alleged unethical behavior and a lack of diversity within the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) that sparked a growing boycott of the association from industry giants like WarnerMedia, Netflix and Amazon.

Key Facts

NBC said in a statement Monday that it would not air the Golden Globes in 2022 but is “hopeful” the ceremony will return in 2023, explaining the decision is necessary because it will “take time and work” for the HFPA to impose new changes.

The network responded to reporting in the Los Angeles Times in February, which detailed a series of ethical issues at the HFPA including “substantial payments” the association made to its members that could be in conflict with Internal Revenue Service guidelines, as well as potential conflicts of interest that include members accepting payments or gifts from producers or studios in exchange for their support.

The Times’ investigation also highlighted a lack of diversity in the HFPA after the awards body overlooked a number of Black-led films and TV shows in its 2021 awards, noting the association has no Black members.

The HFPA has pledged to impose wide-ranging reforms, including increasing its membership by 50% over the next 18 months, recruiting Black members, hiring a chief diversity officer and holding members to a new code of conduct that prohibits them from accepting promotional items.

Times’ Up and more than 100 PR films have criticized the changes as “sorely lacking,” however, and the HFPA has been slammed in recent days by A-List stars including Scarlett Johanssen, Mark Ruffalo and Tom Cruise, who the Hollywood Reporter reported Monday has returned his three Golden Globes Awards amid the controversy.

WarnerMedia—which includes HBO—joined Netflix and Amazon Studios Monday in boycotting the HFPA and refraining from any “direct engagement” with the association, saying in a letter before the NBC decision they believed the proposed reforms do not go “far enough in addressing the breadth of our concerns” and the 18-month timeline for imposing the changes ensured they would not affect the 2022 awards.

Crucial Quote

“We continue to believe that the HFPA is committed to meaningful reform,” NBC said in a statement Monday. “However, change of this magnitude takes time and work, and we feel strongly that the HFPA needs time to do it right.” The HFPA has not yet responded to a request for comment on NBC’s statement.

Big Number

$60 million. That’s the approximate amount that NBC paid the HFPA each year to air the Golden Globes under the terms of an eight-year deal the network signed in 2018, as reported by Variety.

Surprising Fact

This isn’t the first time NBC has dropped the Golden Globes: the network previously cut the HFPA loose in 1968, after the Federal Communications Commission found their awards show “substantially misleads the public as to how the winners were chosen and the procedures followed in choosing them.”

Key Background

The Golden Globes honors both film and television productions and has traditionally been viewed as a bellwether for what productions could be honored at the Academy Awards, garnering ratings that the Times notes outpace the Emmy Awards and are encroaching on the Oscars. NBC has aired the broadcast on its network since 1993. While its membership is set to rise under the new reforms, the HFPA consisted of 87 foreign entertainment journalists as of the Times’ report in February, and the outlet notes the association rarely admits a significant number of new members—with some current and would-be members alleging the group turns away qualified applicants “out of concern that they would encroach on members’ professional turf.” “I think the Globes are honestly the most important moment leading up to the Oscars — and when you think that such a small group makes those decisions, it’s kind of horrifying,” one film publicist told the Times in February.
