DULUTH, MN -- Going to camp last summer was not an option as the COVID pandemic put a wrench in most activities to help fight the virus and slow the spread.
What will this summer look like?
As day camps at the Great Lakes Aquarium are a favorite, Emily Wartman who helps run the camp says they have decided to cancel the festivities again for the second straight year.
"Due to the nature of our space and staffing limitations, we made the decision about six weeks ago," said Wartman.
Even with Minnesota's plan to gradually loosen COVID guidelines, Wartman says the camp has too many activities that require close contact with staff and animals.
"Our campers are behind the scenes collecting water samples or taking care of animals and those spaces are really tight," said Wartman.
Meanwhile, other camps like the YMCA day camp in Hermantown are excited to welcome kids back with fewer restrictions.
Melissa Fanning with the YMCA says last year their rule was 10 campers for every teacher, and everyone had to wear masks both inside and outside.
"We have now expanded our pods. So we still have to stay within pods due to our state certifications, but we have increased them to 15 kids per one staff," said Fanning.
Even with the precautions, Fanning says being able to play with friends in the pool or outside this summer will be great for kids' mental health.
"They will have more interaction with different kids. They have that social and emotional learning happening, and they will be able to interact with other people," said Fanning.
