‘We’ve never done anything like this.’ Meet the Jackson singers opening for MercyMe at the fair - MLive.com

JACKSON, MI-- Paula and Stephen Ziegenfuss weren’t sure if they should apply to MercyMe’s search for a local concert opener but were encouraged by their community.

“Our friends were saying ‘you guys should submit, you guys should submit’ and that two or three people... turned into like 30,” Paula said.

The Ziegenfuss’, who live in Jackson with their four children, have led worship at Jackson Free Church for eight years, and now they will open for Christian band MercyMe at the Jackson County Fair.

Contemporary Christian music band MercyMe performs at 7 p.m. Aug. 9, with doors opening at 5:30 p.m. Formed in 1994, MercyMe’s “I Can Only Imagine” was the first digital single in Christian music history to be certified platinum.

The band was set to perform at the 2020 fair, but rescheduled to this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Stephen, 37, and Paula, 38, took the role of worship leaders at their church in 2013 but have been singing together since 2002. When they met at Ohio’s Cedarville University, they sang and led worship together there as well.

“So we’ve been doing worship together for a pretty long time,” Paula said.

Stephen also builds guitars and has supplied them to musicians like contemporary Christian singer and songwriter Phil Wickham and Illinois Christian band Vertical Church Worship. He not only loves to lead worship, but also loves to build instruments that let others create songs and bring worship, Paula said.

The Ziegenfusses applied to perform because they thought it would be a fun opportunity to worship with the Jackson community, Paula said. When they learned they were selected, they were humbled, she said.

The couple doesn’t have an official band name and their band members include varying church members, Paula said. When it comes to having a band of volunteers, Paula said it’s hard because they want to include everyone in the performance at the fair. However, they are super excited to be performing, she said.

“I just think it’s the Lord’s provision, his anointing on a fun opportunity that will bring glory to him and something that’ll be fun for our church to do,” Paula said.

Paula and Stephen have written their own songs, as well as covered the songs of other Christian music artists.

The Ziegenfusses aren’t sure what songs they’ll choose to fill their 45-minute performance yet, but they want to perform for not only their church but the entire community.

“We’ve never done anything like this,” Paula said. “This is just, I think, an awesome opportunity to worship with our friends and family and Jackson. I am so thrilled and honored.”
