It Looks Like This Is The Fall 2021 Marquette Men’s Soccer Schedule? - Anonymous Eagle

So, on Monday, the Marquette men’s basketball Twitter announced that they were going to release the non-conference schedule in the afternoon. That made me wonder if there was any movement on a schedule for men’s soccer, as the season is about a month away and preseason training is down to just weeks away.

I did what any one would do in that circumstance: I went to GoMarquette.com to see what I could see. Lo and behold, right there on the men’s soccer page was a schedule preview that showed Exhibition matches scheduled instead of MU’s NCAA tournament matches at the end of the spring season.

Yep, that’s right, just like the women’s schedule about a week ago, the men’s soccer schedule is up and sitting there on the official Marquette athletics website. No press release about the schedule yet, so there is the possibility that this is not a finalized schedule.

In fact, one of the biggest reasons why I am curious if this is not a final schedule is the absence of UW-Milwaukee. The cross-town rivals have played each other 47 times in the past. With the exception of this past spring, when everyone’s schedule was very much “play whoever you can play” and thrown together on the fly more often than not, the Golden Eagles and Panthers have faced off in every season since 1973. It would be quite honestly shocking to not see the Milwaukee Cup be contested this season. We should note that Marquette’s women’s soccer team also does not have a date with UWM on their schedule at this point, and they too have not missed a yearly game against the Panthers since the series started.

As for what is officially schedule at this point, Marquette has three exhibition matches scheduled: Home dates with Cardinal Stritch and Loyola-Chicago sandwiched around a road trip to face Bradley. Those are MU’s tune-ups for the home and season opener against Green Bay on August 26th. That match against the Phoenix kicks off three straight at Valley Fields to start the year with SIUE and Kansas City coming in next.

MU’s first official road game of the year is set for Monday, September 6th, as the Golden Eagles head down to Oklahoma to face Tulsa. Four days later, Marquette has a much shorter road trip to DeKalb to play Northern Illinois. From there, there’s just one non-conference game left, and that’s a home date against in-state rivals Wisconsin on September 13th.

There are no NCAA tournament teams in this six pack of non-conference opponents, which isn’t surprising given how small this past spring’s tourney was. However, four of the teams — sorry, Wisconsin and Kansas City — finished the year with a top 100 RPI and when you remember that there were only 187 Division 1 programs in action in the spring, it’s pretty impressive that MU crammed their entire schedule into the top half. Sure, it’s possible that limited schedules — Marquette only played 11 games even with two NCAA tournament games to their credit — might have caused some wonky RPI numbers, but it seems that head coach Louis Bennett is doing a pretty solid job testing his team before conference play starts.

Speaking of that, Big East play is scheduled to start on Saturday, September 18th, with a home game against Villanova. The league is going to a full round-robin schedule with everyone playing all 10 of the other teams in the conference. The re-addition of Connecticut to the Big East means that Marquette gets five home games and five road games instead of having to go back and forth between four and five at home every year.

We should note that MU was one of three Big East teams to make the NCAA tournament in the spring season, and the Golden Eagles will split the two games against their other postseason friends in terms of home and road. They will visit Seton Hall on Friday, September 24th, while the home date against Georgetown comes on October 30th, and that match will double as both the regular season finale and Senior Night for the Golden Eagles. Marquette has two redshirt seniors listed on the roster along with eight redshirt juniors. With everyone getting a bonus season of eligibility due to COVID, I’m not 100% sure exactly how many of those 10 guys will be wrapping things up this fall.

Here’s what is officially scheduled as of right this second. All times Central, of course.
