Garbage will not be collected for the second day in a row in Mount Vernon Friday.
Trash service was halted Thursday after Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard issued a state of emergency.
She and sanitation crews say the city’s garbage trucks are not safe enough to be on the road.
Many of the trucks are 25 years old, leak oil, have bald tires and face other issues.
Crews told News 12 one truck slid down a hill and into an intersection earlier this week because the tires are in such bad shape. They say the metal thread is coming out of the tires on the front and the back.
The mayor blames Comptroller Deborah Reynolds for not paying about a half-million dollars in bills — some of which included invoices for parts to fix the trucks.
Reynolds blames the mayor, insisting she doesn't know to do her job.
In the meantime, the sanitation workers and people living in Mount Vernon are caught in the middle.
"They need to do something about this. Whatever needs to be done, needs to be done,” says Denise Booker, of Mount Vernon. “We can't live like this. It's going to pile up again tomorrow, and the day after. What's going to happen next?"
Henry Martin has been living in the area for three years and says the garbage situation has never been this bad.
“Very big problem with the rats and that’s my main concern,” Martin says. “The rats and the germs.”
According to the mayor, New York City sanitation officials agreed to lend Mount Vernon eight garbage trucks for at least 90 days.
Yonkers is going to share some of its vehicles over the next few days until the trucks from the city arrive so that Mount Vernon crews can begin pick up.
Crews say pickup will begin on the south side of the city Saturday and on the north side on Tuesday
