PHILIPPI –If you’re looking for a ride in Philippi or some of its surrounding areas, Here and There Transit is able to accommodate your travel needs throughout the week.
The business, which is funded by the Barbour County Senior Center, recently had a change in leadership when Brettley Harris took over as new Transit Operations Manager. Harris takes over for Jerry Johnson who left to pursue another job.
“I took over about a month ago and so far things have been going pretty smoothly so far,” said Harris, who is a recent graduate of West Virginia Wesleyan college with a degree in business management. “I’m thankful for the opportunity to join the organization and it is my commitment to work hard to fulfill this role to the best of my ability.”
Harris said his first order of business and his main focus at this time is getting the word out about everything Here and There Transit offers.
“I’d like to get our passenger count up and one of the best ways to do that is to get the word out about what we do,” said Harris. “I think a lot of people think we are just mostly for seniors since we’re funded through the senior center. But anyone can ride and use our services, it’s for everyone in the community.”
Here and There Transit operates five day a week, Monday through Friday. There are 10 stops inside the loop that the vehicles travel each day, beginning at 8 a.m. and ending at 3 p.m.
“We have a loop that goes to the same stops everyday, which is mostly for people who want to go to town, get dropped off and picked up later,” said Harris. “It’s an every hour loop that makes the same stops every hour. Then we have something we call “demand’ where you can call and make an appointment. With that we can do medical runs, pick people up at their house and take them home.”
Harris said that Here and There can also take people to Buckhannon, Elkins and some other neighboring cities if an appointment is made in advance.
“People just need to call in ahead of time, tell us what they need and where they need to go and we will take care of it,” he said.
The business currently has a fleet of 12 vehicles that consists of vans and busses.
“We have some new fleet and some really nice vans,” said Harris. “We are currently switching some things out and getting rid of some of the older stuff and bringing in some newer stuff.”
Harris said he’s also been working with Here and There’s mechanics to get some of the other vehicles that have been down for a while, back up and running and on the road.
