A Last of Us fan has shared an original painting that depicts what Ellie could potentially look like in a third instalment of the series.
User ZeroElysium posted their artwork on Reddit, where it was met with an overwhelmingly enthusiastic response. The painting shows Ellie in her mid-twenties (for context, she is 19 years old for the vast majority of The Last of Us Part II), with considerably longer hair, a new outfit and a band-aid covering up an unexplained wound. In a fun little detail, ZeroElysium has confirmed that this adhesive plaster is meant to be astronaut-themed, as a nod to Ellie's passion for space exploration.
While The Last of Us community is notoriously divided on many things (particularly on Reddit), this artwork has received a great deal of praise. Reactions to the original post are almost universally encouraging, with some users claiming that the franchise's developer, Naughty Dog, should take notes from the design if they ever get around to making a third game.
For example, flipdrizzle comments that the painting "looks like concept art for a part 3" and Hatori_hanzo90 advocates that ZeroElysium be given a full-time position at the development studio as a character designer.
Meanwhile,_Andy_Bagles_ writes: "This somehow [sic] 100% faithful to what a slightly older Ellie could look like".
This sentiment is also echoed on Twitter, with @sohaLethal commenting that "Naughty Dog better be taking this into account".

Elsewhere, RockyMotion points out that this version of Ellie more closely resembles original actress Ashley Johnson (who portrays the character through motion capture) and says that this is an especially nice touch.
There has been a lot of appreciation for smaller details in the artwork too, with redditor SmallElephant noticing that Ellie appears to have changed her footwear style as she has gotten older, trading in her old sneakers for studier boots.
Likewise, bonchakk points out that Ellie's frequent use of a bow and arrow has seemingly left marks on her face and Nortonhearsahoot observes that she is still carrying Joel's trusty revolver.
Finally, @BeforeNeal asks if Ellie's hand (which is conspicuously buried in her pocket here) is missing the fingers that were bitten off at the end of The Last of Us Part II. ZeroElysium confirms that this is indeed the case.

While Naughty Dog has not revealed anything yet about a potential Last of Us 3, it seems that fans would be very happy if it were to feature an iteration of Ellie that looks like this. In the meantime, they will have to be content with Bella Ramsey's portrayal of the character in the upcoming HBO series.
On a related note, ZeroElysium has also produced artwork for various other iconic video game characters, including the ever-popular Lady Dimitrescui from Resident Evil Village.
