
Thomas Tuchel’s side are already being linked with a different player every day by media outlets around the globe and inevitably, this gives the impression that the club are about to spend big.
Chelsea have certainly turned to the January window for help during the Roman Abramovich era to replenish the stocks. More than £230 million has been spent on personnel, some of whom have proved to be excellent buys. Nicolas Anelka, Branislav Ivanovic, David Luiz, Gary Cahill, Nemanja Matic and Olivier Giroud are some of the best players who have been recruited at the start of the new year.
But the question right now shouldn’t be about who they are going to bring in — a more appropriate subject to discuss is whether they need to sign anyone at all.
The 2021-22 season is only three months old but it has been more than enough time for the strength of Chelsea’s squad to be on display and fully utilised. Tuchel has not had it easy. He has had to cope with 15 players missing at least one game this season through injury, illness, suspension or, in Thiago Silva’s case, a late return from international duty.
Many absences have been fairly minor but being without both of his recognised strikers in Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner for the last five games wasn’t ideal, and
