No one is anticipating that Ryan Poles’ prediction of the Chicago Bears taking back the NFC North will happen in 2022. Most realistic Bears fans are under the realistic impression that the team will struggle this year, but are hopeful for what the team can achieve in 2023.
There was hope that Aaron Rodgers would be on the move from the NFC North this year. For those who wanted to see him gone, unfortunately, he is going to be around for a few more years. Rodgers just signed an extension worth $150 million over the next three years. That said, his go-to wide receiver is now on the move. That’s right, Davante Adams was traded to the Las Vegas Raiders yesterday and he instantly signed a five-year deal averaging nearly $30 million per year.
Will the Packers trading of Davante Adams make things easier on the Chicago Bears?
When we look at the weapons that Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers have, it is pretty obvious that their wide receiver group is going to need some revamping. Could seeing one of the best wide receivers in the game shipped out of Green Bay, coupled with Justin Fields being the focus in a way he wasn’t in 2021 enough to make the path to greatness even easier for the Chicago Bears come 2023?
Obviously, many things can change over the next few years. Green Bay now has two, first-round picks. You’d have to think that at least one of them will be on a wide receiver and it’s possible that the Packers draft their next Davante Adams. Adams was a second-round pick out of Fresno St. He is being reunited with Derek Carr in Las Vegas, his college quarterback. This is a fairly deep wide receiver class and the Bears are now going to have to compete with the Packers at the position.
Without Davante Adams, I’d have to wonder if Green Bay looks to bring back Marques Valdes-Scantling. Personally, I am not a fan of Valdes-Scantling, but it’s possible that Rodgers wants some familiarity in his receiver group. The Packers put a second-round tender on Allen Lazard which means he is not likely to go anywhere. I don’t foresee a team wanting to give up a second-round pick for Lazard. Robert Tonyan is another target that I would think returns.
As of now, the receiving group looks like this for the Packers:
Allen Lazard
Randall Cobb
Amari Rodgers
Malik Taylor
Robert Tonyan (maybe)
That looks worse than the Chicago Bears’ current wide receiver group of:
Darnell Mooney
Byron Pringle
Dazz Newsome
Equanimeous St. Brown
Cole Kmet
Again, this is going to cause some problems as the teams compete to either sign other free agents or draft a new one in the 2022 NFL Draft. The only hope here is that there are no guarantees with the draft. The only guarantee is that the Chicago Bears will not have to face off against a top-three WR in Davante Adams twice a year any longer.
