Sunday was a scrimmage day for the Huskers, a final big practice thump before prep work for an actual game begins.
It was also a chance for any players in position battles to make their cases before some tough depth chart calls are made heading into the opener.
A depth chart always remains fluid, and it seems like it could be especially so at certain spots on this roster with all the newcomers. For example, take a defensive lineman like Devin Drew, who just arrived to Nebraska inside of a week ago. The transfer out of Texas Tech is still getting acclimated to things in the Husker program "but he does show up," Scott Frost said of Drew already grabbing attention here and there. This is mentioned to say someone like him isn't *maybe* on the 2-deep yet, but might be as a few weeks pass, and still could find important snaps early.
Or take the trio of Garrett Nelson, Caleb Tannor and Ochaun Mathis. Does it really matter which two of those play the first snap in Dublin? Not really. Rather, can they get the best out of each other? You might say the same at nickel, where there's a really good three-way battle of guys who will all probably play. Or safety, where it's felt like a packed-in competition all along.
"Who starts?" is a popular thing to ask. But more importantly, who can finish off plays? Who can finish off series? Who finishes off games? That's what counts most of all.
And that's not lost while throwing some guesswork – with some help from all the offseason interviews – at what a Nebraska opening day 2-deep could look like.
We'll go through the offense tomorrow. Today, it's about naming names on Erik Chinander's defense. Better described around here as the Blackshirts when they're really balling.
