You all have heard what people say about weather in Texas: Don’t like it? Wait a day.
I’ve had some good days fishing this winter but overall, it’s been harder than I can remember. I like winter — a long, cold winter of days and this year we had very few of them. The water never got down to the temperature I like.
Sometimes fishing my deep holes, I would have a fish or two hanging around but they were empty more times than not. Charlie even caught some nice bass while sitting down in my comfortable chair in the back of Tombstone.
More than not, we had to dig them out. I found one spot where for several trips I was catching fish. The lake only got a few degrees below the 50-degree mark; that just didn’t call for my bass to group up.
Now on the other hand, the stripers took up the slack and the guides were on them. Just lately even they are having to work to get their clients on fish. The guides in our cove are coming in later in the day than before but talking to those clients as they waited to get their fish cleaned most were happy with our lake.
This year the weatherman has caused me and Charlie to pass up on some good days we could be fishing on because we were told wrong about the weather. Tuesday morning Tombstone and I had to work harder and stay longer than usual to catch three medium and one small bass in four hours.
Bad as I hate to move — I’d rather stay in one place — but this last Tuesday I had to move a lot and even fish some water I usually never go into for my article. This time I was lucky because in the very back of Grandpappy the water was warmer.
I traded in my deepwater rods for a Drop Shot Rod, a rod with a Smithwick Rouge Suspended Jerk bait, I added one more rod with a Bomber Flat a Red Crawdad Crank bait. The experts say when the water hits 50 degrees, crawfish will start coming out. These three rods and many casts gave me something to write about.
Now this past Saturday there was also a high school bass tournament with over 200 boats in it and they had to move the weigh-in over to the Dam site ramp.
Little Dixie Bass Club held their March Club Tournament. Twenty teams entered and they caught 64 fish; there were 11 limits in two days, five zeroes and the rest of the field had fish, just not many. Winning was the team of Durward Cook and Jerry Brown with five fish totaling 17.71 pounds plus big bass, 6.72-pounder; second with five fish was James and Lane Stinnett at 14.50 pounds, third was Hayden Burkett and Jeremy Whitson with five fish totaling 13.97 pounds, fourth was Mark and Cade Bisson with five at 11.67 pounds and fifth was Ed Larkins and Joe Clouse with 11.58 pounds.
My friend Johnny Unerfusser, who I fish with quite often, was out Saturday in the herd of high school boats. He said he fished most of the day and caught some good ones in Highport.
This wonderful weekend put a hold on my St. Patrick’s Day Party. There was a long-legged, bearded leprechaun reported near my house carrying a black bucket of gold coins and drinking a green beer headed for the end of the rainbow in my yard. Dang weather.
