COMANCHE COUNTY, Okla. (KSWO) - We’ve all had experiences with rocky roads, but one neighborhood circle has has been waiting over a decade and wants change from whoever is responsible.
“Now we’ve been complaining about our roads since 2009-2010 when I bought this house brand new,” Dennis McKenzie, a long time resident said.
“Me and my daughter can’t even ride our bikes around,” said McKenzie’s neighbor, Chris. “It’s not safe.”
“We pay taxes, pay our bills,” said another resident. “Why is our road like this?”
Residents at Hillard Estates said this road hasn’t been paved for at least fifteen years. While they explore their options to get it fixed, all they’ve met is roadblocks and red tape.
“You get to the road and it doesn’t match the quality of homes or families you see in the neighborhood,” a fourth resident said.
“The road is terrible. It’s deteriorating,” added Marcus Johnson. “Pot holes from here to there.”
As the years went by with their being no major improvements to the roads, McKenzie decided to take action.
“This development used to be an HOA,” McKenzie stated. “So once it got resolved, he turned it, and got away from it. That takes it back to the county.”
McKenzie wrote a letter to District One County Commissioner John O’Brien, expressing his concerns of the road.
In the letter he said it poses a hazard to school buses, emergency vehicles, and asks if there can be any permanent solutions.
In O’Brien’s written response, he said other people have also reached out. O’Brien provided two options, adding this is the best the county can offer.
“He said we either got to sue them-- Hilliard, Mr. Simmons. Or we have to raise the money within the circle to pave this road,” McKenzie recalled.
O’Brien also stated in his letter, the reasoning is because the developer collected money for the road service, however never provided those funds for the work to actually be done. O’Brien adds this is speculation since it was done before his time in office.
“It’s a terrible situation and I don’t know who’s responsible for it because I contacted the county commissioners office and they told me the developers responsible,” Johnson said. “You can’t find the developer.”
McKenzie has had the same luck.
“Have wrote letters. No response,” said McKenzie. “He’s washed his hands of it. Doesn’t want anything to do with it.”
All of the residents who spoke said it shouldn’t fall on their shoulders to repair the roads.
McKenzie says he’s not going to stop until he’s exhausted all of his options.
“Maybe the Governor. I’ll go as high as him,” added McKenzie. “Then if not, then I’ll write my congressman. Something going to get done with these roads. It’s pathetic they still look like this.”
