'Why would you like this?' asks US soldier as he tastes British Armed Forces ration pack - Forces Network

A soldier with the Army National Guard in the US, whose funny TikTok and Instagram videos have been viewed millions of times, has started a ration pack tasting series on YouTube – with his latest episode taking on one of the British menus.

Sergeant First Class Tyler Butterworth, or @butterworthdasyrup as he is known online, is generally impressed by the "smorgasbord" which Menu 6 of the British 24-hour ration packs offers.

But he uses words like "tastes like cat food" and "I feel like I'm gonna hurt myself" to describe some of the food items inside the bag.

It's all just banter though, as the soldier is known for making comedy videos, and in the end he does give Menu 6 a rating of 74 out of 100.

However SFC Butterworth seems to hit the nail on the head about the sesame bar that's included, with one YouTube user commenting below the video saying: "The sesame bars are one of the single worst things to grace our MREs [meal, ready to eat].

"Everyone uses them as cement for defence building or gifts them to this weird lieutenant we have that loves them."

Sure, sesame bars are hard as nails and you end up with bits in your teeth, but that's all part of the fun, right?

SFC Butterworth said: "Ever since I saw this bird food right here, I've been dying to try it."

Saying he believes it's "fit for human consumption", SFC Butterworth inspects the sesame seed treat, remarking that it's so hard he's not sure how to eat it, adding: "I feel like I'm gonna hurt myself."

After the tiniest of bites, a look of disgust washes over his face and he comments: "Why would you like this?"

However, the experienced eater knows there's more to each item in a ration pack than first meets the eye, saying: "Maybe this is like the MRE cheese in the United States, where you put it in your pocket and let it warm up for a while so it's not as hard."

The main meals do not get away from the content creator's intense scrutiny either.

According to SFC Butterworth, the Indonesian-style spicy rice with pork and pasta bolognese meals do not look appetising, prompting SFC Butterworth to jokingly question whether the meals might be cat food.

During certain parts of the video, he films a close-up to show the viewer the contents of each food pack.

The pasta bolognese, or spag bol as some affectionately call it, doesn't get away lightly.

He said: "That just makes you want to go like 'I was going to go to this Italian restaurant but then I saw the British pasta bolognese and I decided for this'.

"Said no-one ever!"

SFC Butterworth is a big fan of the large "weird-looking trash bag" the food comes in, adding that service personnel in the US would 'field strip' it of its contents and use it to keep their underwear dry.

However, one Australian YouTube user offers a possible different use for the empty ration pack container, saying: "The bag is a "poop bag". We leave NOTHING for the enemy to find."

SFC Butterworth is also a big fan of the "intense" matches that come with the ration pack, and proves just how effective they are when he lights them, prompting a rather funny response.

With a lit match in his hand and a shocked expression on his face, an alarmed SFC Butterworth says: "Look at this thing. Holy crap. It's still going. I hope I don't set my fire alarm off!"

SFC Butterworth's gentle mocking of the British ration pack highlights the Armed Forces' love/hate relationship with field rations.

It also brought back memories for some of what used to be in ration packs in years past, such as the mini tabasco sauce and specially made Yorkie chocolate bars that were branded with the words 'It's Not For Civvies'.
