Go low or go home. It’s the mantra of many final rounds on the PGA Tour, including the one playing out on Sunday at the Shriners Children’s Open. The good thing for the two men paired together in the last twosome, Adam Schenk, leader by one at 18 under par over Matthew Wolff, is that each is quite comfortable doing just that—going low—in Las Vegas. Schenk, 29, has posted 12 straight rounds in the 60s at TPC Summerlin dating back to 2018, while Wolff, 22, has done the same in all 11 rounds he’s played at the course.
Both pros also carry compelling backstories that will have folks rooting for them in the desert. Schenk is seeking his first PGA Tour win in his 119th tour start, the Purdue grad’s best previous finish being a T-4 at the John Deere Classic in July that cashed him the biggest check of his tour career to date ($248,000). Wolff is eyeing career win No. 2 after taking the 2019 3M Open title in his third start as a pro, but is looking for his first victory since taking time off this summer to address some mental-health issues he’s been dealing with. (With a win, the former NCAA champion at Oklahoma State also could become the first golfer since Ryuji Imada at the 2008 AT&T Classic to be victorious in a tournament after losing the same event in a playoff the previous year.)
Mind you, the final 18 holes is unlikely to play out as just a two-player affair. Three golfers sit two shots back of Schenk at 16 under, including Sam Burns, winner a week ago at the Sanderson Farms Championship. Should Burns repeat his final-round performance from the previous Sunday, he would become the first golfer to win his first two events in a new PGA Tour season since Tiger Woods did it in 2008, and just the sixth tour pro to do it since 1989.
They’re all playing for a first-place prize money payout of $1.26 million from an overall purse of $7 million.
