SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Ongoing construction on DeLesseps Avenue in Savannah is causing headaches for some people that live in the area.
James Huntley has lived at his home on DeLesseps Avenue for over 30 years but the last few months, he says, have been a headache.
“I started having water in my driveway, I started having water in my walkway. Any time it rains, I can’t get out of my car,” said Huntley.
He says the flooding started when construction right outside his house did.
The construction is all part of the City of Savannah’s DeLesseps Avenue Improvements.
The project will add sidewalks and bike lanes on both sides of the road from Waters Avenue to Skidaway Road.
Currently, DeLesseps is closed from Costa Rica to Cuba - right outside Huntley’s home.
That part of the project was supposed to be completed in late April but the city says it was delayed because of weather issues, and now isn’t expected to finished until late May.
Huntley says that the city raised a storm grate to help with the flooding issue but after Thursday night’s storms, he says it didn’t work.
“Something’s gotta be done, because I can’t live like this right here. Every time something happens I get nervous.”
Especially with hurricane season, right around the corner.
“I don’t want to be flooded out.”
