- Nintendo announced the existence of Switch 2 in a tweet.
- The anticipated reveal of Switch 2 was expected to be a formal affair with trailers, marketing, and game announcements.
- This is so Nintendo.
Nintendo has officially unveiled the Switch 2! Did it announce the new console through a fancy video with cool graphics and millions of people watching live? No? Did it wait for Summer Games Fest, one of the biggest events of the gaming calendar where countless games will be announced by Industry Man Geoff Keighley? Also no?
As you probably already know, Nintendo officially announced the Switch successor in a short tweet by the company president. The console has been an open secret for what feels like years now, but this is the first time the company has acknowledged its existence. In a social media post, written in Japanese, on a Tuesday morning.
We should hardly be surprised. As many people have pointed out, this is a very Nintendo thing to do. But the announcement has left us with more questions than answers. The main one being: has the Switch 2 really been announced at all?
The tweet is really announcing a Nintendo Direct in June. This is something that Nintendo regularly tweets about, announcing its trailer shows so people can prepare themselves for Silksong disappointment months in advance. However, Nintendo is tempering expectations.
Gamers are ravenous. We expect the absolute most at every announcement event – see: Silksong – and end up disappointed. That sucks for us, as our sky-high expectations have been dashed, but it also sucks for everything that was announced. Those games are ignored or forgotten as everyone mentally checks out as soon as they see the next trailer isn’t Silksong or the Switch 2.
Nintendo is getting in ahead, quashing any hopes of seeing the Switch 2 in June. But, in doing so, it officially acknowledged that the Switch 2 exists. Half of me believes this was an accidental slip-up, but the more sensible half of me knows this can’t possibly be the case. This tweet has undoubtedly been drafted through several social media gurus, okayed by higher-ups, and the follow-up translated by a team of professionals. Every word is intentional. Or Furukawa was browsing the social media site formerly known as Twitter on the toilet, as we’re all wanton to do, and decided he needed to spice things up.
However, the tweet doesn’t even announce the Switch 2, nor does it name it. It announces an announcement, which will apparently come within this fiscal year. While I joke about this acknowledgement of the console coming in a casual tweet, the full reveal will be a far more formal affair. We can assume a video presentation, as is industry standard these days, and we can assume it will take place after June, seeing as there won’t be any mention of the hardware during the June Direct.
However, the announcement will arrive before April 2025, if it is to be in this fiscal year. That said, I expect it much earlier. A November release would be perfect for Christmas, but that’s cutting things fine. Nintendo needs to announce the console, seed a bunch of trailers, market it, and announce some games for it, all between June and November in this case. It feels too quick, too rushed.
Comparatively, the Switch was announced two years before it was released. This extended period seems to have been due to the underperformance of the Wii U.
I think the best thing we have to go on currently is Pokemon Legends: Z-A. The game is slated to release in early 2025, and it makes complete sense to be a launch title for Nintendo’s new console. What better way to showcase your new hardware than a fancy new Pokemon game? That alone will help shift plenty of consoles.
Therefore, I expect a Switch 2 announcement towards the end of 2024, primed for a post-Christmas release of the console alongside a suite of exciting games. Pokemon’s a given. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe will be ported, maybe with a new track or four. We haven’t had a 3D Mario game in a while. Metroid Prime 4 anyone?
I’m getting ahead of myself here and wishlisting. I’m doing the very thing that Nintendo has tried to curtail with this post. And I’ll inevitably be disappointed. But I was a Nintendo kid through and through, and never really grew out of it. This is an incredibly exciting time to be a Nintendo fan, so enjoy the build up. Enjoy the June Direct without expectations. And enjoy the Switch 2, whatever it’s actually called and whenever it actually hits the shelves.
